Coles gift card offers

I have a feeling more and more stores will stop accepting these cards due to fraud if more and more people know about them.

Just a feeling.

The current uses alluded to on this Forum are not fraudulent. So I do not believe the stores are missing out.

Companies like Coles, Qantas etc will also sometimes have sales, including on Gift Cards, in order to manage their cashflow.

It has been indicated that some criminals wash there money through them. Hence one reason for the caps. However with such washing I doubt that the store selling cards loses out.

Where people steal GCs and use them to buy GS's would be a problem though. And again the reason why there are caps on how many cards can be bought at any one time.

With my recent Coles M/C gc I'm planning on paying an ATO bill in 2 weeks. But, I am short a couple of thousand $. Where / how can I buy a few more gc at min on costs?

The Entertainment Book seems to be store specific cards at 5% off.

Off topic, but Harvey Norman Vpay cards may be an option ($5.50 fee per card - $300 maximum card value). I've used them to pay ATO previously.

Excellent point jetcam. I actually had this in my calculation spreadsheet but removed it for simplicity, I've added it back because it does make a noticeable difference to the example Europe fare.

Dr Ralph, great points. That's why I really like this forum; so much information is contained within here. I actually had a really pleasant interaction with the staff at my local Coles when taking up this offer, but yes that could be a factor. The immediate spend benefit is very true and would be very useful for people taking advantage of sign-up bonuses, although here I was trying to explore the benefits of the Platinum Edge card. Points noted about the targeted nature and lack of regularity - post revised. The $5 error has also been addressed.

d00dz, how does this constitute fraud? My bonus offer had a 10 card limit so not sure how we are breaking the rules here. Interested to explore your thoughts.

My info is just from over zealous staff not letting you purchase more than 5 per person per day and not wanting you to go to the self service because they dont want to serve you.

Guess it is just 1 in 100 person, because I went back on Saturday and the staff didnt care, but I only bought 5 in-case eyes were looking at me.

Fraud im refering to is people viewing this thread publicly and then using their stolen cc's to buy at the stores. Thus if identified Coles or the retailer may or may not stop the offers from comming.

I think you have answered to yourself why the limit was put in place. Though the people in your last point did not need to read forums like this to be trying it on. This has been happening ever since GCs were invented.

Ditto for refunds on purchased items etc etc....

I know that much as you may wish it to be open slather on buying certain cards from supermarkets, that there are very sound reasons why $$, or number of card, limits have been put in place.

It is one of the reasons I don't make a fuss when asked for ID as happens occasionally

Another issue is that the 'discount' is tied to a FlyBuys account. Targetting could potentially be focussed to reduce the chance of fraud.

Coles directs me to self service. The scanner stops at 5 cards, so I go around again and again if I get lucky with finding cards.

I do sometimes worry I'll be audited so keep a paper trail just incase. It's not like we are putting through tens of thousands of dollars a week, consistently for the whole year. I feel like you would have to put a LOT of money through to raise red flags ie fraud or laundering..
