Terrible stuff, sounds like it was a sudden thing, my thoughts and prayers are with those affected both on the plane and one the ground, the ATC tape on FT is chilling.

Very scary. There would have been a glimmer of hope that they were going to land OK but then the aircraft plunged into the house.

Ice 'built up on doomed plane'

News said:
Minutes before Continental Flight 3407 plummeted to the ground killing all on board the pilots noticed a build up of ice on the plane's wings and windshield, an official said.

The plane was on its approach to Buffalo airport, New York state, when the crew spotted the problem, according to recordings taken earlier on Friday from the aircraft's black boxes after the crash left 50 dead.

"The crew discussed significant ice buildup, ice on the windshield and leading edge of the wings," Steve Chealander, an official with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), told a press conference....

Reports seem to be emeging that a/c was on autopilot at the time of the crash.

Apparently (I'm no expert) recommendation is to fly manually in conditions likely to lead to ice buildup - the theory is you feel loss of performance before the autopilot notices / alarms.

Dont have access to the FT tape. Probably a good thing by the sounds of it.

The report I read said that autopiliot should be off when there is 'severe icing'. At present they are not saying whether or not those conditions existed.
