CMV goes into administration

I'm still surprised at the cost and overall length and scope of the inquiry for an (admittedly stupid decision) that only infected an additional 20-30 people and then was seemingly stamped out.

I would have though the inquiry should also have looked at
- how Covid actually got on board (some discussion of illness on the prior cruise)
- whether it was actually appropriate to let cruises leave at that time, given the experience with Diamond Princesa
Those decisiona 2 weeks earlier infected 700+ on board and a bunch of people in NZ

There were a high number of deaths though.

I think this is based in Adelaide and if so just last week it announced it would be trialling SA based cruises in summer.
That's what I read as well. It appears the Australian arm of CMV is in administration too.

I think all the deaths were from those onboard... Don't believe any resulted from the decision to let people off without waiting on results.

Well, we will never know if earlier intervention and not sending them on more domestic flights contributed in any way to the deaths rather than being treated immediately on arrival in Sydney.

See ABC Four Corners - Outbreak Onboard 2020-05-26

Even as people were getting sick while the ship was trying to dock at Circular Quay, Carnival pretended that nothing was happening onboard, so they could get the ship docked and offload the passengers.

Not quite.

They didn't "pretend nothing was happening". They made declarations of sickness as best they could. They didn't have kits to test, but advised of respiratory issues, as well as other medical issues, which is why the ambulance came to pick up on arrival.

That 4 corners report wasn't to their usual standard. It had some balance and insight, but also had some one-sided statements and went for melodrama at times.

With Coronavirus, there's been no evidence to show rapid treatment is necessary for better results. Obviously some need treatment, but it's only at the stage that symptoms show, which was generally 5+ days after the cruise. So nothing to suggest there would have been improvement.

OTOH,keeping people onboard a la Diamond Princess, which would have been the done thing at that point, would most certainly have made things worse. They would have been kept in public areas and especially if they stayed on for days as was done with Diamond princess, would have increased the spread and ultimately number of deaths.

So on balance, it was a better outcome than it would have been had they held them for inspection. It's another disappointment that the inquiry is not looking at the alternative outcomes instead of just focusing on 'what went wrong,'

NSW Health too, yes, but Carnival was also caught covering up too.

From what had come out so far, so many people were responsible, either tried to cover up, or so negligent, that multiple control points of the process failed.

But then again, ScoMo said on a Friday that he was gonna go to the footy, until Peter Dutton got infected the next day, that's where he realised cough had hit the fan.

The degree of complacency in Australia was so high, but this is off topic.
Remaining OT for one more post.

We arrived back in Sydney late PM 17th March on Carnival Splendor. Carnival did everything right as far as we could see and even held us from departing the ship for a while whilst waiting for NSW health. Eventually NSW health, who were not in attendance, told us to go home and then self isolate for 14 nights from our last stop which was Noumea. (We isolated for 14 days from arriving home)
From getting off the ship to getting home was 19 hours in our case and some others were travelling overseas. We were fortunate there was no Covid-19 on our ship or it could have been another disaster.

My point here is that NSW Health didn't drop the ball as they never picked it up to start with.
