re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

One needs to be careful if stocking up on gift cards now. I believe there is 12 months expiry on these gift cards. I could be wrong....

12 months it is.

That's why I asked mum how much would she spend in a year. No point getting $2,000 worth of cards if you can't spend that much in a year.

Yep 12 months is the expiry. But little risk of not spending the cards, we spend about $1100 a month of food and fuel not to mention toys and presents. Even if I buy $5000 of cards in June I'm pretty sure we can spend them in time. ;)

You are correct. I bought 12x $100 Wish Gift cards (also to help with the Hopscotch promo which I have now completed)...the other day, I used 5 of the cards in one transaction at Dan Murphys :oops::evil: so I don't think I have to worry about the 12 month expiry date.

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

For those of you doing this with Hopscotch, what excuse have you given the DSE merchant when you front up every day buying the same thing? (Of course, the salesperson is puzzled, "why didn't this nut just buy all those cards at the same time?")

Refer to my PM :)

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

The big question here is not the expiry date, but when will amex pull the trigger.
Given we are all scamming points through the gift card system, I wonder if Woolworth / Amex will continue the current / re-new the bonus point offer in the future...

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

I don't believe we are actually scamming. As far as Woolworths is concerned the Gift cards can only be used at Woolworths Group stores anyway so it is all sales and profit anyway.

Somewhat agree...Woolworth only has profit when consumer changes their spending behavior. E.g. Coles customer now going to shop in WW.

But in my case, I have always been shopping in WW Group previously and WW is not making any additional profit from me but at the same time losing out the bonus points.

Furthermore, the promotion was intended for ****smith only (I assume) and now we are enjoying the benefit across the whole WW group. Perhaps "Scam" is a little too strong but I honestly don't think WW's intention was for us to buy gift cards for our own use in other WW group.

Amex 5 x points at Dĩck Smith (over $50)

Amex as been doing a lot of promos recently that relate to Amex partners. I see this as been about DSE as an Amex partner. So some of the bonus points could be coming from Amex. In any case the promo is about getting people to spend at DSE with their Amex. That's happening. If people are buying gift cards that means DSE is getting a big in flux of cash that will help cash flow.

Given that you have to stump up cold hard cash to get the bonus points I'm not sure how any problems can arise. Unlike a previous promo that gave thousands of points for multiple small transactions.

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

I don't see anyone earning millions of points from this like that previous transaction based promo so I don't expect them to change the partners without notice.
Maybe not millions, but I should reach 100K by the end of June but not spending any more money than I would have done without the promotion. But as it changes the merchant with whom I spend, it seems like quite a successful promotion for both DSE and NM ;).

I expect its DSE who are paying for the Amex points, likely at a special rate for this "joint" promotion. So DSE are getting increased cash flow as we purchase the cards from DSE, so they are happy except that their profit margin may not be quite as much as they anticipated. Amex is getting paid for the points and getting the merchant fees, so they are happy. The other Woolworths brand stores get paid for their purchases from the gift card account, so they are happy.

This type of promotion is aimed at getting people to change the way they spend and it seems to be working.

I imagine the cash is just flowing through :)

In any case, I would have thought that there is some margin for the store selling the gift cards.

5% seems to be the standard discount of bulk buys or purchase from organisations. I would guess that provides some indication of the store margin.

And let's not forget the fact that you have to walk into a **** Smith store past all the other gadgets and toy to buy the cards when you previously would have just walked past. yes they have got me to buy a few things when I saw them that I might have got elsewhere or not at all.

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

Well, my Amex got a thrashing today - purchased 11 gift cards at $20 apiece and recharged my go card 3 times.

Yes, I'm taking advantage of the fact that I still have space in the Hopscotch promotion left (cf. the DSE promotion). It took me up to the 6th gift card to realise that if I'm not really taking advantage of the DSE promotion (yet) then I didn't have to just buy my gift cards from DSE (I could get them from BWS, Woolworths etc.). Silly me...

Where do you recharge the Go card? Newsagents?

Central Station takes Amex for paper tickets but not for Go cards so I keep paying with cash.

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

A high proportion of 7 Eleven stores will let you recharge go card, and let you do so with Amex.

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

 yes they have got me to buy a few things when I saw them that I might have got elsewhere or not at all.

As part of that barbaric and cruel ritual called Christmas present shopping, I purposefully wandered into DSE and looked around for certain types of gifts. I also had a very long look at the gift card rack looking for cards for a different retail chain - those would most likely be a decent earner for DSE based on commission.

But no matter which way you look at it, DSE is achieving their goal - getting people to walk in and interact with the store.

re: [closed for registration] 6 Points/$1 at Ðick Smith (over $50)

My local DSE store is out out of Wish Gift cards and the Manager doesn't know when they'll be getting more in :shock::shock::shock:

He did tell me that the **** Smith cards are accepted at any Woolworths store, the same as the Wish gift cards....

Given his competence surrounding the next delivery of Wish Gift Cards, no idea if I believe his 2nd statement.

Glad to say I haven't purchased a thing from **** Smith besides gift cards. I am becoming known to the staff in two of the stores now

In my experience they almost the same. I have used the D!ck Smith gift cards at Woolworths, Big W and Woolworths Petrol without any hassles.

I purchased a 3 Mobile Broadband recharge today (I was expecting 10% discount but this did not eventuate) so that the amount was slightly different to my normal spending pattern at D!ck Smiths.
