Hi, I have a question for the more experienced members. I'm looking at seat availability to Europe using Qantas Classic Rewards for ~17th August 2019 and notice that for all AU cities, no seats are available after 13th August.

It's not school holidays so I'm curious as to why this is the case. Does anybody know?

What class are you looking for and how many seats?I had a quick look and can see availability from SYD to Frankfurt. London, Rome - smattering of days with nothing but lots of Y and the occasional J or PE. Didn't check other places, just a quick look. I am QFF Gold so may have a little (but not a lot) more availability showing up.

It’s the UK summer break though.

Could be that those days already have high loads or are too far out for late award seat releases. You may want to keep checking.

You might wish to check some flight loads on ExpertFlyer or ask in the appropriate thread. That would give you an indication as to whether the lack of availability may be load related or not.

QF status helps with availability on QF flights a little.

I'm was looking for Premium or above to northern Italy but not even seeing economy. However, I can see what you're seeing to Rome (and Frankfurt would be an option for me) so maybe I just need to cast around a bit more widely. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, I'm aware it's the Northern UK/EU break but thought that would influence outbound rather than inbound to EU. I'll follow up on your ExpertFlyer suggestion as well though. Thanks.

What goes out needs to come back as well.

Just out of curiosity, why would UK/EU pax on holiday, presumably leaving the UK/EU, affect AU flight capacity to EU? Or are you meaning that mid August is when they would potentially be returning to UK/EU?

Not everyone will travel out at the start and return at the end. A surge in demand for travel from a destination must be matched with a later demand for travel back (unless everyone is emigrating).

Taking just the UK - the summer break starts in mid July and ends in early September. Given that not everyone will take a 4 or 6 week holiday, on average, the latter half of August is likely to be seeing considered return traffic.

You've got it the wrong way around.

Europeans stay within Europe during summer and escape during winter. Aussies want to visit Europe during summer when the weather is nicest.

Where are you searching to? Have you tried multi city bookings? (Australia to Asia, then Asia to Europe)

Mid-August is both the peak holiday season in large parts of Europe so any visits from AU to see the old families are at their peak. In the more northern countries the schools are back, i.e. time to return home for those families who've been touring the world with kids.

Having holidayed in Greece, Italy and France in the last few years, in September (twice) and it’s meant to be within the “shoulder period” for many places, I saw that tourist numbers were crazy (August is supposed to be worse). They travel from somewhere, including Oz.

Edit: It pays to look 11-plus months out (I.e. when award seats become available) to get what you want.
