Classic reward routing rules

Hi there,

I couldn't find any definitive rules regarding maximum segments etc. for classic rewards.

I know stopovers aren't allowed but how much "sense" does the routing have to make?

Say if I want to fly NYC-LAX-SYD, which is 9950 miles. and costs 128k points in J (9601 - 15000 miles).
Could I in theory use the left over miles and fly for example ORD-NYC-(23h layover)-LAX-SYD? Is there a limit on the number of legs? Can I travel "backwards" before heading towards my destination?
The QF website allows this via the multi city search but errors out before displaying the final price.

Edit: And are there any rules around this for oneworld rewards?

The rules are reasonably simple for Classic rewards with some special rules for oneworld classic awards.

Non oneworld awards are divided into 'trips'.

Trips are basically travel broken by stopovers, change in "airline category", for return bookings the furthest point from departure.

Stopovers in international itineraries are where it is more than 24 hours between arrival and departure from a port, domestically it is different dates for arrival and departure from a port.

Ailine categories are defined in the T&C's and on the website. An example is AA and QF are in the same category, BA and QF are not.
