I am looking to use my saved points to fly SYD to LHR with Qantas classic rewards. Approx how many points is a one way ticket? I can only find points plus pay at over a million points. Any tips in beating the crowds to these seats? Looking for June 2023. Thanks EDIT looking for business clsss.

When the search results are displayed you need to filter on rewards only. As a bronze member it is sometimes paying the additional points and fly with a OW or partner airline as when their inventory opens it is open to every one. Also the likes of QR, JL or CX (pre covid) were better than QF, I would have included EK in the mix however the recent increases in their carrier charges/fuel fines adds a fair bit of cost.

@Xrayspice I just searched on my QFF account looking for JAL awards on QFF. had to go to multi city as individual legs wouldn't show up.
So on 5/6/23 JL 52 then on 6/6 JL43 2 awards on each flight available. 159000 points for 1 person,318000 points for 2 people.
Yes much longer flight time but in QFF terms a cheap award and I much prefer JAL to QF.
I am also red though a QP member which I doubt made a difference.

This is why I asked my questions:

As a NB, your chances of snaring J to LHR with QF on what is a high-demand flagship route are not good because you are excluded from early dibs at inventory, but that is not the case with partner airlines.

But, IMO, in any event take the longer flight time and go JL. It's a MUCH better experience than QF in J.

June is one of the peak travel times, so there may be little/no inventory made available. It's more likely for there to be seats if you can travel outside school holidays and outside the European summer.

I think as a Bronze member classic reward seats on QF flights might become available about 310 days before the flight if I recall correctly. However by then one would think that any QF seats made available for this popular travel time (if any) would have been snapped up.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It’s not even open yet for July. So how can they be snapped up already!?

I was hoping to fly A380. Do JAL have those planes?

You said you were looking for June 2023. Seats are released first for high status travellers at about 353 days out, I think, so if seats are released for June they would either be released/released in the next few weeks or so depending on your dates for higher status travellers.

Bronze gets to pick from what's left over at 310 days before the flight. So if you want classic reward seats on QF metal you are counting on higher status travellers not booking seats released over the proceeding month and a half and/or QF deciding to release more classic reward seats due to low loads on the flights.

Considering you want to travel in one of the peak travel times the chances of there being seats available on QF metal for you to book are extremely low.

If you are looking at June departure and July return that would suggest you intend to travel in school holidays. QF might not release any seats even for high status travellers. If they think they can sell all the seats they won't make classic reward seats available. If you want to travel on classic reward seats in J/F on QF metal then you need to be prepared to avoid the peak travel times.

So you are best to see if other airlines make seats available for QF classic rewards as suggested by others earlier in the thread.

Read the other thread from the link that I posted. Inventory on QF opens at about 353 days ahead for WP, but obly about 297 days ahead for NB - by which time scarce J redemptions are very likely already snapped up.

Status is crucial on QF for early access; not so on the partners.

I don't think JL operates A380s.

No they don't but having travelled on QF's A380 in F and J my experiences on JAL's 777 in F and J have been much better. The seat, the service and the food I prefer JAL over QF.
ok, I have started searching Japan, and so far I am just getting Jetstar business options. I am finding the search function, not very friendly, keeps on showing me economy reward fares.

Make sure to search using 'multi city' as per @drron's post above where he could see availability.

My advice would be that if you see some J availability about the time you'd like to travel, do not procrastinate. Just grab it. There's a good chance it will be gone tomorrow...

Just searching for flights to and from Japan did not come up with anything. I went to the multi city option and put in SYD-HND and second flight HND-LHR.
The awards are not available every day especially SYD- HND so you have to check a few dates. The ones in my post came up this afternoon.
I have no status with QF so you should be able to find something.
Best of luck.

The Qantas system is flawed. I found a few Japan flights, but when using the “where can I go function” they don’t come up. Found a first class seat to Doha, but my partner and I don’t have enough between us for both of us to fly that class. Might have to save points for another year, or two. :(
