I was looking for some advice. I booked a Business Class Classic Award Ticket ticket 10 months ago, one way from Sydney to Heathrow, thinking I will worry about getting back later when I had accumulated more points. I am going back early January and there seems to be no Classic Award tickets anywhere out of Europe back to Australia. My question : Is it likely that a Classic Award Ticket will become available (Economy is fine) closer to the day? I need the flight in about 50 days.

For early January... Chances are slim. I'd probably look at some other options for that period. Points plus pay on MH is good at short notice during holiday seasons. Otherwise someone with more knowledge than me can no doubt run through the other current options with Alaska, USDM etc

Have you tried breaking up the flight. LHR-DBX and then DBX-SYD?.

Very Unlikely you will get one in January because January is a busy period for flights back to OZ and secondly you have really left it too late.

Suggestions above to try to break up the flight back are valid
Other than that options are to cancel award ticket and buy a return, or enrol in a certain Columbian airline's FF program and buy points at a discount. But you may be too late for award flights in that program as well.

look for other partner airlines such as Sri Lankan airlines, or partner airlines flying via a different hub

Wed 21 Jan LHR/NRT BA5 1255/0935+1 showing available in all four classes Y, PE, J & F. I don't have sufficient ff points in my account to be able to look at the F taxes but they'd probably be slightly more the the J taxes.

Y 50K GBP246.56 taxes
PE 75K GBP350.06 taxes
J 92K GBP391.56 taxes
F 134K GBP ???

You could then purchase an economy Starter fare on JQ24 Thu 22 Jan 1215/0045+1 non-stop NRT/MEL with the plus bundle which would be JPY71,510 (AUD702.75).

UL economy LHR-CMB-SIN has availability at the 455 pound level for the period around 17 Jan. Biz around 1310.
Might be worth a call to find out if UL or MH have award seats open.

QF is likely to be about SGD 920 on to SYD in Y. Nothing shown for awards.

Happy wandering

Fred

PS I can understand why people don't get too specific in their profiles, but a general location (NSW/VIC/QLD) would help in answering questions like you posed.
