Citibank upgrading fee free Gold to fee free Platinum

I had a free gold card for line account with them some months back, and closed it to consolidate. Too many cards.

Is there any way i can get the fee-free platinum now?

Why would you close a free card?

in retrospect i shouldn't have done so. But i had a few cards already so i thought i would just close it. Was no loss to me then since i was not actually using it.

With the platinum i get to use the concierge and travel insurance (where AMEX is not accepted), so that is something that would be of benefit to me. Free is better than the $295 i am paying for my westpac altitude platinum, which i will close if they offer me the free Citi plat.

Which brings me back to my 1st question - how do i get it now?

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'll upgrade to the free platinum, the offer stands until November anyway, so I have some time to decide.... quite happy with the gold as it is, and not sure if I'll actually use the concierge service... like others I am pretty surprised I got offered the platinum :p

today i received my new chip embedded citibank platinum visa card (upgraded from free-for-life gold). i wanted to ensure that the new platinum upgrade would not curtail the free-for-life terms and conditions on my current gold visa card. i called and the rep told me "nothing would change" and that i would "absolutely retain your free-for-life status."
so i went ahead and activated the new card. hope this helps someone else in the same situation.

btw, i want to again thank the board or originally turning me onto the free-for-life card last year. this has been a great card.
thanks,
alem

Just ring Citibank to "un-close" the Gold card, providing you only close only within 6 months? Good luck though as they may not be willing to do so.

I think they may be phasing out Gold altogether...?

I hope mine is still in the post... I put through about $15,000 in the last six months... (+ $15,000 in the last statement)...

However, my mother and brother... one of who spent $125,000, the other $5,000 since getting the card... have both got theirs... last Friday!

Before I accept this offer, does anyone know whether Citibank would do another credit check since it's effectively a new card? I'm planning to purchase a property in the near future and didn't want my credit history to be affected...

Hi,

I received my Plat today.

Question is, do you reckon I can keep both the Gold AND Platinum?

Two cards = two point caps to max out.

Almost certainly not. The Plat just replaces the Gold card. No change in credit limit so I see no reason for them to do a credit check.

Some people are receiving an increase in their credit limit, so maybe it is worth phoning them up before hand.

How do i get free mail ? do i have to spend more to get this offer... i got normal citibank gold card about 4 months ago

Just rang them up. I closed the account in April, so it's well within the 6 month window. They said it's possible to re-activate the fee-free card, but it will be subject to re-assessment first. Will know in 24-48 hrs. Also asked them abt the upgrade to a fee-free plat. They said i gotta activate the gold first, then they will evaluate after a few months. Pft!

Shouldn't have closed the account in the first place.

We got our free Plat cards in the mail today and instantly I was suspicious. Glad to hear that Citibank confirmed "free-for-life carries across to Plat" to you - any chance (or has anyone already) of receiving this assurance in writing?

My wife just received the free platinum upgrade from her Gold card as well.

I notice at the bottom of the letter it says the annualy fee will remain the same and they stated $0 annual fee.

So as it's already stated on the letter we can proof that it's free when we are offered the platinum.

What you think about this?

Seems like everyone I know with Citibank gold including myself got upgraded to Platinum (5 of us already)..

This sounds like an act of desperation by Citibank in order to increase their profit (or cut their losses)..
This is because merchants are charged extra for platinum transactions.
I mean..c'mon....even ppl with silver got their free upgrades as well.

I wonder whether the US credit crunch has any connection with this.... :-|

By CBA, you are referring to Citibank rather than Commonwealth Bank? Just to stop Commonwealth customers getting excited:)
