I got the $299 plus 80k bonus points in March and rang today to try and get the fee free for life but they said because the card wasn't 9 months old then I am not able to apply for the fee free for life - after reading this I might ring them again later and see if I get someone different. I love this forum :)

I would definitely try again...I got the 60k points ( really just 40k velocity ) only had the card 2 weeks transferred the points to velocity and changed to fee free no problems yesterday. They had not yet charged me the original $299. Very happy

Great result!

I just got knocked back for a card despite having an exemplary credit history (over three years $50,000 per month average to Woolworths Everyday Rewards) and good cash investments. Problem is...self employed and minimal taxable income through a legitimate tax minimisation strategy.

Citibank said I could reapply in three months but that's not going to help as I still won't have a taxable income.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Maybe your wife, partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, +1 or whoever willing could apply as the primary cardholder and add you as the supplementary holder. That way I guess you still get the fee-free for life and earn points ..... and then whenever the next fee-free promotion returns, you can apply again.

Excellent suggestion however Mrs Plinge is 'home duties' and unlikely to interest Citibank.

Finally got around to calling again on the last day it was available - no problems at all :)

yes I got knocked back as well. taxable income > 800K. lots of assets. no credit issues as I'm aware. maybe I filled out the form incorrectly. maybe they don't want people taking up the free offer? is it worth calling them. I'm a bit annoyed, as it's my first ever credit refusal, and am afraid it'll affect future applications? Is that true?

Well, I just discovered tonight that I was kind of rejected for this one... I got home to my new packages having had emails and phone calls all confirming acceptance of my application, only to discover they had the Visa Platinum card inside - argh! Wasn't what I was after and had no indication along the way that this might be the outcome. I was fairly annoyed and called up to discuss. The only suggestion was to ask for a re-assessment. I can't imagine them deciding to double my credit limit and approve that for the signature card. I guess I'll now have to decide if I want this platinum or not...?

When I signed up to Signature I'm sure it said bonus 60,000 points

Hasn't shown up in my account....remember somewhere that it takes up to three months. Am I imagining this?

There were 2 offers back then, if you signed up to 'free for life' then no points, if you signed up for the 60k points, they you would've had to pay the $299 annual fee.
Did you pay the annual fee?

I had a free for life Platinum card and was upgraded to free for life Signature a few years ago... as the card is totally free you may want to keep it anyway (even if you don't use it) and wait and see if they will "upgrade" you to Signature down the track...
