Got a letter this w/e with a pre-approved upgrade from Citibank Gold.

Seems like the additional benefit mainly include:
A more comprehensive travel insurance (yet to read the PDS)
Concierge
I think I also read someone saying that there are hidden benefits such as upgrades at Hyatt etc.

Any thoughts on whether the $250 annual fee is worth it?
For me the idea of getting a concierge a phonecall away is probably the most appealing, does it live up to expectations?

And if I do go ahead, is there any difference between platinum visa and platinum mastercard? IE: Are the platinum benefits offered by citibank or visa/mastercard?

Thx in advance

Bump... Just received a similar letter today, from the Free for Life Gold.
"...you'll enjoy all these extra benefits for only $131 per year...you'll notice the value of Platinum goes aworld further than Gold".

The only 'new' Plat benefits (rather than just higher insurance claims) are:
  • $2500 ($250 excess) Rental vehicle CDW/ Theft excess
  • $250k Transit Accident Insurance (on trips outside Aust)
  • 12mths extended warranty on card

Has anyone else received the offer? My card had a 1yr expiry so this may be the reason why - the upsell from 'free for life' to a cheapish plat card.

I'd have liked the offer earlier before our OS trip, to use the CDW.

Looking at old threads here, there's no longer any kind of Hilton, Starwood or other Gold comped status, Priority Pass or any other benefits with O/S cards.

I vaguely recall there were better benefits on other Plat VISA/MC cards like Macquarie Bank's offering.

Any comments on this $131 'lite' Plat from Citi?

The biggest concern I would have is that I could never rely on citibank for anything important. better to stick to a platinum card with another issuer and keep the gold citibank card i think.

Car rentals in Australia are usually fully insured however if you have an accident regardless of fault, generally you have to pay an excess, say $2500+, Having CDW waiver coverage on your card means that you only pay $250 of the $2500 excess.........

BUT in your case, you are going o/s and different countries have different conditions.... for example, when I rented a car in HNL you are in fact uninsured UNLESS you purchase their collision damage waiver, personal liability insurance, supplementary insurance etc etc, so I dont think the CDW waiver feature of this plat card would be in fact, imdemndifying you against any possible claim.......... because you are uninsured.

CDW only covers your excess!

Correct me if I'm wrong though!

If only that link you quote worked! Is it just me?

Both. Generally the insurance benefits and such are Citibank. Other benefits are through the generic Visa or Mastercard programs. See for example Visa Platinum

The generic MC program includes only Citi, Westpac Altitude and CommBank, with the latter two offering similar programs - not very impressive.
