Definitely worth a call. I recently got 50% off the annual fee of one of my credit cards just from one call.

I would ring to ask when the points are going to be credited to your account.

When they rattle off their excuses ask to speak to a manager. Then ask where in the t&c's does it state no points for personal ATO spend, where were you advised by the change of policy etc etc. they'll probably offer you something.

Going forward the big 4 bank amex's for ATO spend at 1.5 points per $. Woollies MC is another option, although seen some reports of people having their cards canceled for large ATO payments.
 
Gipps call them up and complain they might as a one off allow you to be credited with some points for this last ATO transaction but after that I would use another method of payment.
 
Hi everyone, this is my first post here though I have been a long term reader of the forum, some informative and fascinating reads!

I have been paying ATO payments using the Select card and have had not problem with points until recently. Today I was told that as of May there will be NO point credited for ATO payments on the card anymore. I thought it was really backhanded as there was no communication to cardholders about this but I was told that it was set out in the terms and conditions so completely justifiable on their part to not inform the cardholders.

Agree with many people here that the Citibank service is appalling. The other card benefits etc are really not all that useful. The priority pass lounges are mostly a joke, and if you go J or F class anyway, you don't need priority pass. I have bought airline ticket on the card but I prefer the airline's own chauffeur transfer. if it wasn't for the Select points I would be gone in a heartbeat. What they have done is very disappointing, as I am one that tend to use just one card, so along with my ATO payments, I put everything else on it as well. But, with my ATO payments no longer earning points, I will be gone.
 
DragonBaby I am moving my ATO payments (partially) to Westpac Black Altitude Amex so I can warehouse the points earned until closer to the time I need them. With Qantas I have been pounding Amex Ultimate because they said they were changing the points earn on ATO on July21st which I have treated as an invitation to run to the maximum.
Both of these choices are so much more expensive but I don't want my Woolies EDRCC to take a cancellation hit.
Welcome to AFF and yes I got touched up by Citi on 180k of Kris points. I emptied my warehoused points to avoid being doubly slammed so we have millions of points to use in the next 3 plus 1 years.
 
The biggest losers here are the airlines...

Without big amounts of points going to my favourite program, I don't feel any loyalty to the FF program since I don't have as many points to use. That in turns means I fly whoever I want to, rather than being driven by where I'd rather my points balance be sent to from citi.

So in all seriousness, it's the frequent flyer programs that should be doing what they can to ensure ATO payments remain a points earner for cardholders.

Because points earned on card = more paid seats/greater overall group loyalty.

I can't confirm for sure, but SROs still earn points - so I'd guess the answer to you question is yes.

The thing is that the term government charges is not the same as paying for a government service. A government charge might be something like stamp duty (which was removed with the GST). If I pay rates or fines with my card, there is no problem according to Citibank - but the ATO payments it is suddenly a problem. Nobody at Citibank call centre understands this concept and they got quite flustered when I pointed out the difference and my legal entitlement. Then there is the RTA (or various roads authorities), local rates etc. These would fall under 'government charges' if Citibank are using it mean money you pay to any government. The list is quite long of government departments where points are still given. I think someone at Citibank didn't like the huge chunks of points going through as ATO payments and has tried to (in my view, illegally) stop it.

My experience with the Ombudsman is that in a case like this, then they give it higher priority based on the number of complaints. If you are complaining about say 5000 points, they may see little value in looking at it, but 100 people with the same complaint is different.

Some technicalities.
Firstly Citibank allowed the ATO transactions to go through for years and award points, so there is an expectation that we should continue to receive it unless otherwise notified. ie, an implied contract.
Secondly, Citibank are using the wrong terms at their call centre. I haven't flagged this with them yet. But in their documents, they refer to 'Retail Purchases' as being the only ones eligible for points. This is defined in another document 'Retail Purchase: a Transaction other than a Cash Advance or a Special Promotion, as determined by us at our discretion.' (from Unsecured Revolving Credit Terms and Conditions). When you call them, they incorrectly state ATO payment as a government charge, which it is not. It is a payment for service, hence the surcharge when you pay the ATO (this is different to a cash advance -taking cash out and transferring it to the ATO).

When it comes down to it, Citibank will argue that it's their discretion that allowed us to get the points in the first place. The counter argument is that they allowed the charges through for an extended period, implying a contract where we would reasonably expect it to be ongoing unless notified (and it's the reason I used my Citibank card for the ATO payment and not another card). In addition they are applying their own terms incorrectly in dealing with us. Therefore, their defence doesn't hold as they are not addressing the issue but something legally unrelated.

Personally, I am down over 30,000 points. They made a vague counter offer for the ATO payment and promised to contact me again, but haven't as yet.

Back when the proverbial hit the fan a few months ago without any warning, I recall quite a few posters received points credit - my hunch is you should be good for 10-15K offer though a lot probably depends how many Citi Select accounts have failed to resign since.
Funny how they accept the card being abused when it is in their favour - loaded the card exceeding 100% of the limit for the first time no problem yesterday and allowed me to blow it all and even exceed the limit by close to 10K today.

If anyone is fighting / still wants to fight Citi over lost ATO points ~6 months ago, the fact they've actually updated the T&Cs after the fact should be helpful (goes someway towards an argument that ATO wasn't banned from points earning previously).

I have just seen this thread after just paying a decent Tax bill on my Citi Select Card :mad:.

Can anyone advise how you can tell if they credit the points or not. On the Amex website you can view individual transactions and see how many points have been credited to each one.

I can't find this type of reporting page on the Citibank site. There is a page where you can see your redemptions but can't for the life of me see earnings of reward points.

Well Mitch I went to Mrscove's monthly statement as I know she does not check the points closely.
Her $700 annual fee comes off the total spend then multiply the rest by two for the Citi Rewards points. Yes they are there.

You are quite right. I just pulled out the paper statements and went back to March and sure enough no credits for ATO points at least back until then! How annoying. If they had told us I would have used Westpac Kris Flyer Amex card which I will do for the future! It would certainly make it easier to check on points if they would do like Amex and list individual transactions on the website with points earned beside each one. This card (Select) is losing its value when you think of the $700 annual fee.
