The MPM is exactly that - you can't exceed 22000, down to the mile.

From the fare rules:

Code:
FL.FLT APPLICATION

         NOTE -
THE TOTAL JOURNEY MUST NOT EXCEED AN MPM OF -
            -
            ACIR22/DCIR22/LCIR22 22000
            ACIR26/DCIR26/LCIR26 26000
            ACIR29SA/DCIR29SA/LCIR29SA 29000
            -
            SURCHARGE TABLES ARE NOT PERMITTED
            -
NOT EXCEED A TOTAL OF 16 SEGMENTS INCLUDING
SURFACE SEGMENTS BETWEEN ANY 2 AIRPORTS.

Consider swapping SYD for BNE perhaps as your AU entry/exit point? That is below 22000.

BNE is a good option, will look into it. Otherwise I'll into the 26 and throw in a less direct route and a few extra stops via KUL or such.

Why can't the AA RRW desk put it together for you, ex HKG, and then book via an AA HKG affiliate?

Turns out the Cathay Pacific offices in Australia can arrange it all.

This is only a recent change as previously they could only ticket ex-AU fares. Now they are able to ticket practically anything CX, ex-AU or not.

In what currency will they make the charge? AUD for something nominally priced in HKD (ZAR LKR USD)? It would be an advantage for those whose CC has a 3% "foreign currency" penalty.

Happy wandering

In AUD and I can confirm it shows up as an AU merchant so you can use an Amex. YMMV...
