So I had some unexpected leave come up in the Christmas week from 24/12-1/1 - just wondering if anyone is aware of any routes from SYD that might still have reasonable price for Y fares? Not fussed really on alliance or even airline just keen for a brief trip away.

I know it's probably asking a lot but thought I'd put it out there and see - when I was HKG based there were often last minute airfare & package deals to Asia just prior to holidays and long weekends to use up the surplus capacity.

I wish you well on your quest. In a rush of blood I offered a colleague with children to work Christmas if he ended up rostered. So no festive season flights for me - if he is not rostered then I am likely to be anyway.

You can only keep an eye out - the cheapest ex Oz fares tend to have minimum advance purchase conditions.

Your best option may be awards.

No matter what, you need to keep a look out daily / hourly.

Perhaps set some alerts with google flights.

sage advice - have been hitting award nexus pretty hard so will continue, google flight alerts a good idea

japan qff awards look promising ex-OOL or CNS, getting there may be a problem though but i'll keep at it...

Speaking of awards, do SQ release a few seats T-14?

As for prices, still looking at about $1700-2,000 for Singapore.

Hmmm...

A few years ago I picked up a cheap BA Premium Economy fare for SYD-SIN for ~$1.5k return. Bought 24th Dec for travel 31st Dec. I didn't go ahead with the trip however.

Have a look at this site. It offers suggestions on flights 2 weeks or so from 'now', but is on points. Join Impulse Points - free email service for points award availability

These were the offers of a few days ago:

Skyscanner app can provide some suggestions, but fares over Xmas period seem a lot higher this yr

Two years ago I ducked off to KL for under $200 each way.

Still on the hunt.

Focussed on Singapore. Has anyone flown Scoot?

Another option is direct to Sin with QF and then Singapore to Jakarta with Jetstar and then home with Qantas.

The Jetstar options stops in Darwin for 5 hours before moving on which is just stupid so that is out. Darwin for 5 hours in the middle of the night. Well I presume Joyce would be happy saving on wages.

Is NZ enough of a break? LAN has very sharp pricing in business NZ-AU for Dec/Jan travel.

Snagged award seats to HKG on CX on Xmas night and return on NYD on QF, took A LOT of persistence but 2 seats finally opened up today :) :)
