Apparently it's had to return to Beijing after a loud noise was heard and cabin temp increased!
 
Any more info/hints - airconditioning system fail (if the cabin temp suddenly skyrocketed?)

Wonder if jb747 can shed light (if he's not yet on his holiday in the wilderness).

Aircon turbine failed?

On a similar note, on Cathay yesterday and had the CSM come on 1 hour after departure in a panicked voice asking urgently for a medical practitioner on board to notify attendants. She said it a few times.

Heard nothing more.

I believe jb747 has discussed this previously. The a/c have more than one a/c system.

A SINGAPORE Airlines Airbus A380 superjumbo heading for Frankfurt has been forced to turn back to Singapore, due to a problem with one of its four engines, the carrier says.

More than 430 passengers were transferred to another plane upon returning to Singapore, and the new flight took off for Frankfurt at about 2pm (AEDT) today.
"Singapore Airlines flight SQ26 from Singapore to Frankfurt turned back to Singapore about 2hr 55mins into the flight after the crew reported a problem with one of the aircraft's four engines," an SIA statement said.
"The crew reported an engine surge in the Number 3 engine and the engine was shut down... a surge is typically a disruption of airflow which affects the normal operation of the engine," it added.
SIA said passengers' safety was not compromised by the shutdown of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine, stressing that the A380 was "capable of flying safely on three engines".

China Southern’s jet returned to Beijing because of a cabin-pressure “problem,” it said on Weibo, a Chinese service similar to Twitter. The Guangzhou-based carrier didn’t elaborate.

A China Southern Airbus A380-800, registration B-6136 performing flight CZ-3000 from Beijing to Guangzhou (China) with 418 passengers, was enroute about 130nm southwest of Beijing when the crew descended the aircraft due to the failure of the cabin pressurization and returned to Beijing for a safe landing about 60 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A380-800 registration B-6137 reached Guangzhou with a delay of 4:50 hours.

I believe jb747 has discussed this previously. The a/c have more than one a/c system.

I think he mentioned that there was two on the A380... (I know there are 3 on the 747).
Either way I think it was a case of they'd rather find out what went wrong on the ground than in the air...

That's the best way to go about it, I think. When something goes wrong, try some troubleshooting. If that fails, switch it off, and let the ground engineers work it out.

Well it does come down to that beautiful saying of "I'd rather be on the ground wishing I was in the air, than in the air wishing I was on the ground"
 
The 777 series is very reliable indeed, but the A380 is not bad either. I'm not sure if there is a need for such comparison. Issues can occur on both types, so I wouldn't choose my flights based on which aircraft type is ever that slightly more reliable.
