Just another little aspect as to just how hard the MU FA's try to please - after exiting toilet 99% of ime you will handed hot towel to wipe your hands - some things they just do so well - others so way off the mark.

Every flight I take I view as an adventure - MU certainly is an adventure - but YMMV so it clearly is not everyones cup of tea..

PVG-MEL - Dinner menu:

Fan fried scallop, boiled pumpkin cube, shrimp meat minced, chicken sopu, tiramisu cheese cake, staches and tubers? Huh? yeah, no thanks.

how hard is it to get a simple menu right?

This along with the deplorable english spoken by their cabin and tech crews makes me give not only MU but all chinese carriers (ex CX and SQ) a wide berth!

Good luck flying Y on a 10 hr flight on a chinese carrier - memo to self - take gum boots for toilet visits - you are gonna need 'em.

ick ick and more ick!!

In their defence, they are not the only ones who could improve in this area. the QF F Lounge menu has had a similar typo on it for months now.

I've never had any language (or sanitary) difficulties travelling on CX. Their service is excellent.

Typos I get, as it can happen to anyone, but poor grammar is inexcusable. And I did specifically exclude CX and SQ as they are IMO, without fault and their service quality and standards far exceed those of the flying kangaroo and almost anyone else for that matter.

Jeez you are a hard marker mate - is it your position that ALL countries around the globe should speak and write English PERFECTLY?

When it comes to aviation related matters, it is. English is after all the designated language of international aviation.
Whilst english does not need to be perfectly, it must be better than conversational.

Its not such an issue in the cabin but when this sort of rubbish:

B-2383 China Eastern Take Off Melbourne needing clarification ATC09Jan11 Australia Operations Road - YouTube

Air China Pilot - YouTube

occurs up the front, I have serious concerns for my and others safety. These guys should be pulled off the line, until they can communicate appropriately, effectively and PERFECTLY with ATC.

So wilco should I reasonably assume you won't be joining me for a Taitinger in J on MU738 Tue Jan 10?

Ok so if you're flying in economy you will get a very different experience. I flew Syd to LHR return a few years back (on the newer planes), food consisted of the same meal pork and rice or pork and noodles throughout. As for the IFE I watched the same film overhead about 3 times with English subtitles (at least I didn't have to wear any headphones).

You've only got 10hrs, it will be a breeze ;)

I have only ever flown Y inter once with MU - PVG-SIN - never again.

4 or 5 years ago I flew MEL-PVG-PEK-LAX - the PEK-LAX leg and return was fabilous - great food and new plane - cannot remember which plane bit was very good.

I just flew SYD-PVG in j on MU and thought it was very good. Yes, lots of chinglish on the menu, but that just gets you ready for the plethora you will see when you get to China! :) I think its funny and kinda cute.

The service was WAAAAY better than I was expecting, I will take their super attentive, polite service anytime over the battleaxes you sometines get on QF.

My flight was a Asia Miles points redemption. Cruiser Elite, $2300 seems like a VERY good price, is that return? If so, where can i get that deal? I fly to China a few times a year and would happily pay to fly MU in J if the price was right.

cheers

Timmi

Shame you still have to deal with the QF staff upon check-in, their catering from Q-catering, cabin cleaning from fleet presentation and the departure of the aircraft :)

so big deal. I've heard similar things when listening to channel 9 on united with pilots seeking clarification.

the china eastern YouTube video didn't even have the correct destination listed on the map intro.

once in the air you have TCAS and if anything were to ever go wrong in Chinese airspace I'd rather have Chinese speaking pilots to get me there.

I too agree with service on china Easter... the crews really do try their hardest, but are sometimes let down by the product they have to offer.

Big deal to me as a former professional in the industry, United does not have a home country which differs from the rest of the world in the language used for Aviation.

Chinese plane takes off from airport ... without authorisation

Stubborn pilot to blame for near disaster at airport: report

TCAS is also not mandatory in a lot of Asian airspace excl HKG and as already mentioned, its hardly fail safe as 71 poor souls found out, 2002 Überlingen mid-air collision - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

IMO, there is nothing wrong with a pilot seeking clarification of ATC instructions, but there is a HUGE problem when the crew dont understand the instructions, cannot read back those instructions and then not understand the instructions when they are repeated as slowly and plainly as possible.

Markis10 also raises very valid points regarding the unauthorised takeoff etc.....

As for TCAS, that too is in english, so how are they going to take action to the Intruder, TA and RA warnings??

and some of us are (current) professionals at enjoying life :)

we drive, eat butter, eat crackling on pork, have a drink now and then, might eat veal one a year, and just accept maybe that pilots are not there with the intention of killing themselves... so as long as they follow their natural instinct of self preservation* then the rest of us passengers should be ok too :)

(*excluding airline cadets who happen to find their way into the right hand seat of an airliner with zero hours jet flying...)
