Ryugin
- our second visit
- a little apprehensive as the chef now has an outpost in HKG and TPE (not too keen on chefs who spread themselves out)

It is down a small road off the main strip in Roppongi. Easy find as I remembered where it was.

IMG_7910.jpg
small lit sign - would not know where it was unless you had google map!

Table was not ready yet when we arrived a little earlier, so up to the waiting area on the level above
IMG_7920.jpg
If you look closer in the left side there is a very large owl.. two in fact behind the glass

Had some nice Japanese tea while we waited
IMG_7918.jpg

Noticed a Michelin snow dome
IMG_7911.jpg
Is this what you get when you get some michelin stars?

And the pigging out session begins..

Started off with some Yuzu flavoured drink (seasonal I was told..) PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 4.5

IMG_7935.jpg
IMG_7938.jpg
start off with some sake
*did not get to choose the sake cups this time, cup was matched to the crystal flask the last time but still a pretty glass and flask

PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 7.5 smooth sake the way I like it

Grilled fire fly squid chawan mushi PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 8

IMG_7951.jpg
Bamboo shoot dumpling PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 8 (surprisingly yummy and crunchy bamboo shoot, not like those sour tasting ones usually found in Chinese restaurants) and Steamed Hamaguri Clam PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 6.5 (tasty but texture a little too firm for my liking)
Broth was good

Excellent photos so far. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks Tom
Photos mostly going to be from iPhone.. they frown upon larger cameras
Perhaps a camera had fallen on some of the china in the past, some of which I have been told are quite pricey

Enjoying the trip report.. Thanks KitKat :)
So love Japanese presentation... Everything is so beautiful.

Great TR. May I ask, is this a set menu? I'm going next month and would be keen to try something like this but wouldn't know what to pick!

Thanks for reading. Yes it is a set menu
Most of these Kaiseki places are Set menus.. as per the Kaiseki course

Ryugin seems to allow a la carte after 9pm but you could only book for these reservations on the day.

Some places give you a menu in English, Ryugin and Ishikawa did
Easiest if no menu is to ask them what they offer? how much it would be? and they would ask what you don't eat

Great, thanks. This is will new to me. Have never been. I'm off to Google Kaiseki. Cheers!

I think best left to last... a little scary but a splurge as this may be the one and only time with my parents in Tokyo

Continuing our meal at Ryugin

Sashimi Course
Sorry was too excited, ate the turbot at 12 o'clock before I took the pic
So from 12 o'clock - turbot (empty), bonito, monkfish liver, tile fish, abalone, spiny lobster
Central item - herring roe, squid, sea cucumber

IMG_7959.jpg

central item

Favourite sashimi item - tile fish - agreed by all of us - mild but flavoursome

Tile fish PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 8.5

Overall Sashimi Course PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 7.5

There's just something about the way Japanese food is presented - the dish is seen as a sum of the food and the eye, all a matter of harmony. Fabulous pics and descriptions.

"Binchotan: A powerful scent of Charcoal Grill"
Kinki fish stuffed with grilled eggplant
This was delicious - PCR[SUP]TM[/SUP] 9.5 (dish of the night for me)
Moist flesh, buttery taste, crispy skin
AND
I so love the plate!

"Spring in Full Bloom - Taste of Hills and Dales"
Famous Array of Spring Vegetables
A "steam boat" dish, dipping the very lightly cooked vegetables into the simmering broth
A playful dish, allowing you to cook your veggies in the delicious broth and dipping in the sauce.
I just blanched it in the broth and ate most of it without the sauce to enjoy the simplicity and clear taste of the vegetables
PCR 7.5

IMG_7990.jpg
palate cleanser - apple with ginger
did the job well, refreshing
PCR 6.5
