Love cherries. Last year they weren't so great. I don't think I bought many at all. Too hot most likely. But this year they are indeed like small plums. And I'm the only one in the family who likes them. Well, I think the grandson might.
We have been trying to go to the festival there for the last five years but something like torrential rain, fires, pandemics, et al always gets in the way. It's well timed not long after Floriade but the demise of the Collector Pumpkin Festival rules out a classic overland journey embracing an itinerary to rival the northern hemisphere's "Bulls to Beer".
Yes mine were quite large but very dark purple colour. Very firm texture - firmer than grapes.
Secondarily happy to support the regional areas directly rather than via Woolies/coles
I also heard that the small roadside vendors around the Hume Hwy fuel stops get their cherries daily from Young and might be an option for those who can’t get to Young but who want to buy in larger amounts
Cherries in season are priced by size and quality, and many varieties are grown.
Picking yourself is not always cheaper - you usually win if you are tall and can pick the big ones short people cant.
I think Valley View have the best drive in and pay for arrangement, Young NSW. But if you ask- as not displayed at the counter, ask if there is a row16 box, usually 34mm and above. Cherry season has ended, but some orchards still have stone fruit coming on. At this time any end of season cherries come from the coolroom. the greenness of the stalk guides you what to buy in the shops. Tassies cooler weather means their cherries are probably better, but noting is better than straight off the tree.
Tassie is still producing and possibly for another 3 weeks. The cherries we buy are at the orchard -all 3 that I have sampled are exporters. You just ask if picked this morning if worried.the ones i bought yesterday had just been delivered to the packing shed.beautiful Lapins.
