I spoken to a lady at Qantas 13 13 13 I asked her about laguage allowance. We are flying ADL-Mel in J and inquiring about excess bagage.

From what I understand she said:

We are allowed 3 piece of laguages each to a max of 32 Kg, that is 96kg in total per person. She than continue that the 4th piece will cost me AUD 22, the 5th piece will cost me $33 and the 5th piece is $44. After the 5th piece there will be no guarantee that our bagages will be carried in the same flight.

I asked her what does it means by 4th, 5th and 6th pieces related to the cost. She told me that each piece of max 32kg will cost me that amount of money, i.e AUD22 for my 4th piece (up to 32 kg) etc etc.

I asked her twice about her statement and each time she assured me that that is the case. I somehow not convinced as I used to work for TG, and I know that excess bagage will be charge per kg instead of box/piece.

My question now, is she telling me the right information?

Is there anyway to know in advance or to secure this excess bagages we will have to be in the same flight as ours (providing our bagages are not excedding 5 pieces per person)?

All advice are very much appreciated. Thanking you all in advance.

She is correct, domestically, baggage is charged on a piece basis. I thought however, that baggage was $20 + GST per peice. Hence, 5 bags would be $44 for both bags. (ie. $22 per bag with three free).

You will be unlucky to get pinged though, I have checked 5 bags in whY before and not been questioned. Admittedly, they are within their rights to though and it will depend on the person checking you in. It will depend on how many of you are travelling to.

Wow thank you very much Littl_flier for your informations, I had always thought that the maximum weight allowed is more important to be met, i,e say in business class is 30 or 40 kg as per what it said on the ticket (olden days), so let say 3 pieces of laguage the total of 3 laguages have better be not exceeding the 40 kg allowance.

About the charges, I believe she said that the 4th piece will be charged $22, the 5th piece will be charged $33 and the 6th piece will be charged $44. In this case I would assume should I bring 5 pieces of laguages, I will be charge $0 for the first 3 laguages, and $22 + $33 possibly adding tax ontop of that (she did not mentioned this, but never mind) for the rest of the laguages. Hey I don't mind paying that as long as they allow me to do so and it is not $22/kg.

There will be 4 of us travelling this time (2 adults and 2 children).

Straitman, I think I have those inocent and polite face :D In those days when body checking were just picked in random order, 10 out of 10, I had never been stopped to be checked :D

I had in the passed been naughty and offered smile and polite pledge to the check in boy/girls to allow me to exceed my bagage allowance.

I had also an experience where I been told to pay extra money on my extra laguage and get the money returned in the end and told to never do it again in the future :D

So yes, I understand the value of smile and politeness.;)

Thanks for reminder tho, I could well be extremely stress on the date we are travelling knowing that we will have to say goodbye to Adelaide!:(

If there are four of you travelling and all of you are in Business Class, remember you will be entitled to 12 pieces of luggage (3 each). For excess baggage, you would definitely have a case for $20 + GST ($2) at least for the first four bags. (ie. 1 additional bag each.)

Yup, I'd love to include our kitchen sink :D

It's a relocation trip we are doing next month, it is hard to wait 3 months before our stuff coming. I can live minimal for 3 months but with 2 kids, that will need a bit more :D We still have 400 kg excess bagages on top of that! So yes, if I can unplug my kitchen sink I will!

I can't do what Simongr do i.e his non check in challange:D I will do it once we settled in the other end. Even then, we normally only travel lights on our way out, but never lights on our way back home
