Checked baggage through on separate bookings

Looking to check if it’s possible to through check luggage for the following scenario please and if anyone has had any experience lately?

pnr#1 revenue booking on QF
MEL/SIN return

Connecting time is approximately about 2.:5-3 hours. either way if flights are on time.

pnr#2 award booking using QF points
SIN/KUL return

I read that QF will allow check through iif one leg is an awards booking on a oneworld airline?

But on the return journey does MH also allow check through to MEL?

Thanks. Hoping I’ve not made a stuff up.
So tried to tag the bags straight to KL on the leg from MEL/SIN but not possible for some technical reason and the booking while seen on screen cannot be added to the QF itinerary despite best efforts of agent including manual search and add in option as it picks up a different person!!!

No idea and they could not solve issue so hopefully I can get it routed at transfer desk when I land in transit.

Only thing was I did online checkin for both legs which might have triggered issue.

Anyone experienced this anomaly?

Pure incompetence sorry, and would send in feedback to QF. Would not be a technical reason at all, they just didn't know what to do nor how to do it.

As an update for those not able to check through bags but using MH after deplaning from QF, need to actually go to T2 Transfer desk 2E to see the MH rep there to get the bag retrieved and retag. No need to exit and reenter immigration.

Cannot use the T1 terminal transfer staff as was advised to go to 2E.

Give yourself enough turnaround time if booking different pnr.

Would like to but not quite clear what process they applied but sounded like they were going through the usual steps that they are familiar with and it failed. And worst the booking that comes up in the auto search and manual lookup using the pnr number, the system pulls up is someone else!

That would include all the staff on the day as they all had a go at various ways in the first check in area n first lounge too got involved. Even called Qantas bookings….

A real mystery. Thank goodness it’s Changi. Efficient and systematic.

On the return leg today from KUL -SIN - MEL on MH first leg. QF second leg separate pnr. No probs linking. But I did not do an online check-in.

Hi, please can I check what's the best option if I want to have bags checked all the way to final destination?

Origin: SYD
Final destination: Seoul

Leg 1: QF25 SYD to HND <already booked>
Leg 2: HND to Seoul (ICN or GMP) <not yet booked>

I have two options for Leg 2, Asiana or Korean Air. Which one is better if I want to ask the check-in agent in SYD to tag my bag all the way to Seoul?

Unfortunately I cannot book Japan Airlines for Leg 2 because the price is 2x Asiana/Korean Air.

Thank you.

If on separate tickets, I don’t see why Qantas would even listen to you. They incur a cost by doing so (if technically even feasible), and will most likely not entertain this at all.

That's what I'm afraid of. I suppose then I have to go through Japan immigration to get my bags, and then check it back in.

Hi All,

I have two QF classic rewards bookings (separate PNRs) in July and am keen to know if I can through check my baggage.

- Flight 1 is QF SYD to LAX
- Flight 2 is AA LAX to ORD - booked as QF rewards flight

I have asked the contact centre to link these bookings, but they were unsure if I could through check my bags.

Note - I can see it is possible to purchase these flights on a single booking through Qantas web app.

Have approx. 3 hours transit time in LA so cutting it a little time if I can’t through check…

Technically the policy only covers a mixture of revenue and reward bookings, so it would not apply in your situation. However still worth asking.

There is no way to link the bookings that will fix the problem, linking the bookings does nothing in this scenario. They would need to be merged into a single PNR which QF won’t do (you could cancel the AA one and ask for it to be added to the QF one).

It won’t save you any time as you have to recheck your bags anyway, I’d just go with it if it were me.

Thanks Justin

Provided I can check in online for LAX to ORD I should be able to easily reprint tags at the recheck in TBIT and do that, rather than having to recheck at domestic terminal…

Will see what Qantas can do on the day, would be good if they could check in and print bag tags so I don’t have to do it at LAX!

Should be no issue checking in online for your onward AA flight. So that’s one less thing to worry about.

If QF doesn’t check through, still go to the transfer area and ask at the AA counter to tag you bag. Hopefully they’ll do it there.

BTW, presumably you booked both flights online separately and have ended up with two bookings. With 20:20 hindsight, it would have been better to call up and ask QF to add the second booking to whatever was booked first.

Yes, there’s a 5k(?) booking fee but you’ll have no drama with checking through luggage BUT more importantly, you’d be “protected” if your QF flight is late inbound and they’d automatically try and rebook you on a later flight.

Apart from that, welcome to AFF.

Yes - in hindsight I absolutely should have.

Unfortunately, the advice of the contact centre was to go make a separate booking and then they could link them… a lesson for next time!
