My long suffering better half and I are relocating to London. We have booked Y SYD-SIN-DXB-LHR on QF codes and only EK metal for the SIN-DXB leg. Ms TripleB is Gold and I am WP. According to my reading of this:

Checked Baggage Allowance | Qantas

She is entitled to 46kgs and I am entitled to 50kgs - which can be spread across unlimited bags (so long as no single piece exceeds 32kgs). Am I reading that correctly?

I am proposing to check in 10 or so what are essentially sandbags full of clothes and squishable things like sheets and towels (each weighing 5 or 6kg) and then three conventional suitcases and potentially (subject to weight) one sturdy cardboard box. The sandbags (which are sturdy in themselves) and box will be wrapped with pallet-wrap and gaffa tape.

My questions are:

1) Have I got it right that together we have an allowance of 96kgs across unlimited bags?
2) Is the check-in agent likely to have a meltdown at Sydney with a dozen or so pieces to checkin?

That would seem to be right. Don't forget to take into account the other conditions listed on that page:

Total dimensions for each piece must not exceed 158cm (62in). Dimensions for checked baggage are calculated by adding together the width, height and depth of the piece of baggage.

No single item of checked baggage may exceed 32kg (70lb). For tickets issued with an allowance in kilograms only, there is no restriction on the number of pieces within the weight allowance for international travel.

If they are small sandbags as you suggest, I'd suggest placing a few of them into a larger bag that is easier to handle, such as those stripey plastic/canvas style bags. You may find it will reduce the chance of any smaller items getting lost and easier for everyone involved (yourself included) to handle the large number of items.

Hi TripleB,

My my first post here! I'm in the International freight field, just watch out on the dimensions as the weight may volume out. The old tonne of feathers vs tonne of bricks, they will hit you up for which ever is the greater. Typically the volumetric weight is LxWxH in cm divide by 6000 and this will give you the volume weight in kg's per sack/bag/box.

Hope it helps

Myself, SWMBO and the mini Colsters are going to Europe for a holiday in August. SWMBO asked how much luggage we could take flying in PE. I pointed her to the website, and she has worked out that it's 180kgs (3x NB, plus 1 WP) plus 4 children's items (whatever they are)... I think I have made a mistake by not saying "1 suitcase each" instead of pointing her to the website. :)
