Hey guys,
I recently travelled from Australia to Sri Lanka on a budget and thought I’d share a few tips on finding cheap flights, as that was the biggest cost of the trip.
1. Be flexible with dates
This made the biggest difference. Flights were much cheaper when I avoided peak seasons like December–January and school holidays. I found better prices around Feb–June and again around September.
2. Use flight comparison tools
I checked a few different flight search sites and compared prices over a few days. Setting price alerts helped a lot because fares changed pretty often.
3. Timing your booking matters
For me, booking about 2–4 months before travel worked best. Too early was expensive, and last-minute prices were even worse.
4. Look at connecting flights
Direct flights were pricey, so I went with a stopover (like via Southeast Asia), which made a big difference. It takes longer, but I saved quite a bit.
5. Mix budget airlines
I ended up combining a couple of budget airlines, and it worked out much cheaper than booking a full-service airline the whole way. Just make sure to check baggage rules.
6. Fly midweek if possible
Flights in the middle of the week were cheaper than weekends in most cases I checked.
7. Keep an eye on sales
Prices drop randomly, so it’s worth checking regularly. If you see a good deal, it’s usually best to grab it rather than wait too long.
Flights can be expensive if you don’t plan, but with a bit of flexibility and patience, you can find some really good deals. Once you get there, Sri Lanka is quite affordable, so it balances out nicely.
Happy to help if anyone’s planning a trip!
