Chasing Status

Hi all ,

I was wondering what the general thoughts were concerning chasing status.

Each year I travel enough to maintain silver only because I generally buy cheaper tickets, I have bought Qantas lounge access separately in the past as I thought that it gave me generally what I wanted and was cheaper that multiple fully flexible tickets or 2 OS business tickets.


However it is nearly time to renew the Lounge and again I am considerable short of Gold.

was just enquiring on members thoughts especially when overseas I have been refused entry into other clubs even when flying with a partner which I understand the reasons behind

my main flight are Japan and Italy or England

IMO, it's only worth it if the value that you receive is at least equal to the money you spend getting it.

IMHO ... QF Gold does provide additional benefits to that of Silver + QF club.

For international if in Y ... provided you are flying QF (or affiliated) or OneWorld ...
Gold is nice for Business Class check-in & priority boarding.
Gold allows better pre-seat selection and a greater chance of points upgrades.
Gold allows access to OneWorld lounges (not just QF lounges).

So if stepping off the QF network and onto the OneWorld network, Gold is streaks ahead IMHO and worth it (provided the cost isn't ridiculous to achieve).

Then remember yr 2, Gold is easier to retain.

All excellent points. It's just that one has to decide what value each of those is to them.

QF Gold gives me OW Sapphire, and that gives me lounge access in VIE for an AB/HG flight in Y coming up soon, an extra 15kgs on CX/AY etc. So while no showstoppers, it all adds up.

If status and the benefits that go with it are important to you then it's worth chasing status.

But at the same time if you are no where near Gold and the cost to achieve Gold is too much then just renew Qantas club membership again.

If the cost to achieve Gold is close to the cost of Qantas club membership then it would make sense to chase status.

Also if you're frequently outside of the QF lounge network (at least, the places where QP membership gets you access), consider the alternative of buying yourself a few drinks and some food at the airport. Quite often you will be able to get better food than what the lounge will provide, and if it's your thing, possibly more sociable. An option if the lounge access will not be regular.
