A little annoyed with QANTAS. I booked an international ticket ages ago and recently thought it would be nice to extend it. I only wanted to change to the return leg and pay the difference. Imagine my surprise when I was charged extra for the flight I wasn't changing.

Hence to change the return leg it was going to cost close to $1,000, so I will stick with the original ticket. Or wait till closer to the date to see if I can get a cheap one way flight LHR to MEL (Olympics time).

Just wanted to meow ...thanks.

You can't really complain about this. The fare type and rules would have been displayed when you booked... with a link to this table:
Bookings - Fare Types

By changing the ticket, you are changing the fare type for the entire ticket, not just one leg.

See these Important Notes
  • The fare for your new booking may be higher than the original fare, depending on what fares are available.
  • You must pay any difference between the fare for your new booking and the original fare.

It may be cheaper to change the return leg after you have flown the outbound leg of your booking. Worth an enquiry after you arrive.
