Hello,

Looking to make a mel-syd-ool booking in flex Y in the next few weeks.

There's a chance Mrs Excel may be in Sydney the day prior so I'm wondering if it's possible, after booking the flights on the same day, to only change one leg of the journey (and change it online) to be the day prior / after?

Unsure as to maximum connection time on QF and whether I'd be hit with the phone fee if I cannot do it online.

Haven't booked yet but have been researching as connecting.

Ah I see. In that case it might be worth searching as a multi city booking - if there was no increase in price I would book that way

Works out to be far more expensive booking as multi-city - does anyone know if it is possible to change one flight in a connecting flight after booking?

The fare for MEL-OOL does not permit a stopover in SYD (no domestic fares do usually). If you are over 24 hours in SYD it will be broken up into a MEL-SYD fare + a SYD-OOL fare, which I presume is a lot more expensive.

You can change the flights to be either earlier or later but expect it to re-rate it at the rate on the day that you change it.

Thanks madrooster.

What I'd like to book is 0600 Mel - 0725 Syd, 0900 syd-1025 ool, but if mrs excel makes it to sydney, pull the 0600 syd-mel to be the evening prior (so would be less than the 24 hours).

No options that include the overnight show up in cash bookings (im guessing due to the SYD curfew and it not being an overnight airport?) but do show up as redemption options:

So it's definitely possible to change the individual flights in a connecting flight booking?

The domestic multi city tool won't do what you are trying to do as it will try to price it as MEL-SYD + SYD-OOL as that is what you would enter. It's not smart enough.

Give QF a call and ask them to price the two flights that you want (with MEL-SYD on the previous night) and see what the price comes out to be, just to ensure that the MEL-OOL flexi fare will price as a through fare rather than two separate fares. I don't believe there is a transit duration restriction for QF domestic other than the standard 23h59m transit rule. For example, all the legacy US carriers allow a maximum transit of 4 hours only for domestic fares, with the exception being forced overnights.

If this works, then you should be safe to book as a MEL-SYD-OOL same day for now, and then change it later to include the overnight transit. The change will need to be done over the phone as the site is not smart enough to deal with the overnight transit in SYD. Just be aware that should the B class fare goes up in price between now and when you make the change, expect to pay the fare difference. There should be no change fee. The overnight transit in SYD may mean that you need to pay another set of domestic taxes but I'm not 100% certain about this.
