And with 5 peices you need an army to help carry it all :D
Going to/from Lord Howe Island on 14kg is not much.. then again you dont need much except some bathers right ;)
And fitting all your ski gear (boots included) into 20kg when going to Hotham must also be rather difficult.

Of course any other normal domestic dash-8 route at 20kg should be no issues.

So if i am a QF lifetime and a WP, does that mean in whY on a international journey for example i would have 20kg + 10kg (QC) + 15kg (WP) ? i know they would try to say that as a WP the benifits override the QC benifits but i am QC life... (i can even use my normal QC card for access) so do i get both ?

No. You get the highest additional allowance, which is 15Kg.

It states at http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/qantasClub/benefits#jump6

qf site said:
There is a maximum weight of 32kg for any one piece of baggage on all Qantas flights and a maximum of one piece at 20kg on QantasLink Dash 8 flights. Qantas Club extra baggage allowance is not additional to Platinum, Gold or Silver Frequent Flyers' extra baggage allowance.

Dave

So it does very clearly say :oops::oops:

Still its hardly an issue since if i am traveling with more than 30kg there is something very wrong with what i am bringing (or i have girlfreind with me which means i need my allowance !)

Anyway wants to start a poll on what peoples average International check in wights are ? maybe i should ;) Funny thing is traveling whY i usually end up checked bags, traveling J and F sometimes even my carry on would not exceed 7kgs :)

E

I find that it is v easy to get beyond 30Kg when taking dive gear with me

Dave

That would do it... i assume you dont take the weights in your weight belt, and a re-breather or a tank ? (and you leave the tank, just take your back plate and all your fittings, regulator etc ?)

I don't use a weight belt, but i do take everything when going domestically ( including twin set ). Makes good use of the 3-5 pieces allowance

QF Domestic baggage changes

Important Changes to your Checked Baggage Allowance28 November 2008
From 1st December 2008, Qantas is introducing a new checked baggage allowance that will make it easier when your customers travel with Qantas. The new allowances will apply to any tickets purchased from 1st December 2008 for travel from 1st March 2009 inclusive.

New Checked Baggage Allowance

We have aligned our Domestic and International checked baggage allowances using a weight system. So, if you are travelling in economy on a Domestic or International flight with Qantas you will now have a maximum free baggage allowance of up to 23kgs.

Thats more or less just a reminder as unless i am going crazy we have already discussed it ? I just notied it published yesterday.

Dave,
I cant see anywhere in this thread it was confirmed at 23kgs, but the QF site now has it as confirmed, 23kgs on domestic flights, and international, so...

Domestic Y 32kgs/peice -> 23kg total
International Y 20kgs total -> 23kgs total

Thats the way it looks from the info posted.

Where on the QF site does it show it? Just went to the luggage allowance page and there is no mention of the changes?

Dave

I wonder if they will be adapting the BA-like excess baggage policy. If so, I'll be transporting a rather large number of suitcases next time I fly on Qantas (instead of deliberately putting myself on a BA codeshare and doing the same). It's almost cheaper than having suitcases sea freighted.

Sorry should have posted the link... I found it when i was looking for airport taxes....

Latest Qantas Update

If in the industry news area.

Not a lot of information on the change but you can see from the text it pretty clearly looks like what i posted above, of course they may mean something different but i think we could almost assume they mean what they say in regards to these things.

Qantas have now posted the changes to take effect from December 1:

Fly - Baggage - Checked Baggage New

New Checked Baggage Allowance Explained

If you are travelling in Economy:

  • Your total baggage weight of up to 23kg (50lb) is free of charge regardless of the number of pieces for domestic Australia, trans-Tasman, domestic New Zealand and international routes (except for the USA).
  • For the USA, US Territories, South America or Canada, your total free allowance is 2 pieces at 23kg (50lb) each.
  • The maximum baggage weight of any piece must not exceed 32kg (70lb).
If you are travelling in Business:

  • Your total allowance is 30kg (70lb) on trans-Tasman, domestic New Zealand and international routes (except for the USA).
  • For domestic Australia routes, your total free baggage allowance is 32kg (50lb).
  • For the USA, US Territories, South America or Canada, your total allowance is 2 pieces at 32kg (70lb) each.
  • The maximum baggage weight of any piece must not exceed 32kg (70lb).
If you are travelling in First:

  • For trans-Tasman and international routes (except for the USA), your total allowance is 40kg (88lb).
  • For the USA, US Territories, South America or Canada, the total allowance for First customers is 2 pieces at 32kg (70lb) each.
  • The maximum baggage weight of any piece must not exceed 32kg (70lb).
Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club Members:

  • Platinum Frequent Flyer members continue to receive an additional 15kg (33lb) allowance or one extra piece on the USA routes.
  • Qantas Club members continue to receive an additional 10kg (22lb) allowance or one extra piece on the USA route.
  • Silver and Gold Frequent Flyer members continue to receive an additional 10kg (22lb) allowance or one extra piece on the USA route.

Excess charges for flights to/from USA are $25 per piece for bags weighing between 23 and 32 kg, and $150 for an extra bag.

These changes seem to disproportionately affect Business Class, Qantas Club and Plat/Gold/Silv members travelling domestically.

A domestic business passenger could take 3 x 32kg, this has been reduced to 1 x 32. If enforced, this will annoy business class passengers. QCs/upper tiered FFs have lost the 1 extra piece. This may cause loyalty loss?

My reading is that a doemstic plat business class passenger would get 32kg + 15kg, while a gold would get 32kg + 10kg (although, it looks as though they have some updating of the FF benefit pages to do yet.)

Your right, but as a domestic business traveler a lot would be gold/qclub/platinum so you could have a the limit 40 or 45kgs combined. pain for people like Dave but not too likely to affect many people i would not think.

Remember you can still take 2 bags, just the total must not exceed (30/40/45kgs depending on no status/mid/plat)

E

Agreed - but still a massive reduction - 4 x 32kg down to 30/40/45.

The new rules seem to imply a Qantas Club member who is also plat gets 10 + 15 but I know others here have different thoughts - ie only one or the other.

It's probably the same as before - only the highest benefit counts. In the case of a QC + FF Plat, that would be an extra 15kg.

Whilst it's a big reduction, it's probably a lot more sensible before (can you imagine a Plat in J carrying up to 160 kg? Insane!) Most people I think wouldn't carry even 32kg; for most with status it will almost make little difference.

I guess we knew it was coming eventually even if just to make it simple rather than save a whole lot of money.

Have they updated the additional charges ? domestic and NZ is now $8/kg and international charges start at $35/kg (ouch !)

E

(can you imagine a Plat in J carrying up to 160 kg? Insane!)

Insane? Perhaps not. I have reported in the past that my loyalty to the QFF system has been in part due to the generouse luggage allowance for WP's in J. Many times have I carried 7-8 boxes weighing approx 30kg each. Every time Qantas have been happy to carry them for me. And as a small business owner that made me very loyal and never ever looked at any other domestic options.

I see this as a serious devalueing of WP status. Now I know 8 boxes is more than I thould be allowed. But I was allowed 5. Now I am allowed 1.5 :(
