Members of AAdvantage must now have acitivity every 18 months, down from 36 months, in order to remain active and retain their miles. New policy is effective Dec 15 2007.

AAdvantage mileage retention policy

Unfortunately this appears to be a growing trend and follows United decision as has been widely discussed. Hopefully Qantas won't get any ideas, afterall, they are going to increase value aren't they ........... ;)

Just as an aside QF009, are you madly cramming for exams to be posting at 2:16am? ;) If so, I know the feeling well. Bring on two weeks of hard work. Good luck! :)

This is a non-event personally for me - the likelihood of me not flying or having any AA points in an 18 month period is negligible - if it in anyway opens more award flights then its good news.

I'd say for the majority here it wouldn't be a problem because we could just post the odd QF flight. But for Ma and Pa Kettle, it may be a different story. Having more award seats may be a benefit however.

There may be a short term reduction in Awards due to people dumping points. My first thought was 'oh well, i better book something' since I no longer credit to AA.

That was until I realised that my easy way to earn points and defer the date is crediting Priority Club points directly to AA since I don't really have any use for those small number of points earned by my regular but occasional stays at Holiday Inn/Crown Plaza/Intercontinental.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Anyone with no activity in an 18 month period does not qualify as a "frequent flyer" in that program.

Even if one truly has no real activity in the 18 months - it;s not hard to keep the points alive. Just buy 1000 points for US$50ish or something.

Cheers. :)

I have 2 essays to finish before I can actually cram for exams. Thankfully the exams aren't in the first week.

Just buy someone flowers! If you don't know anyone, I will volunteer. I prefer orchids and roses! :D

Logically that makes sense but there seems to be a disconnect within the Aadv program now between miles validity and elite status (albeit a rare one).

Eg I requal'd for EXP on May 10. this is valid till Feb 09. But if I have no activity for 18 months all my miles expire on Nov 10 2008 while I will be EXP until Feb 09 (and PLT till feb 10). So I am not a "frequent flyer" in so far as miles, but am EXP

I'm with simongr and NM on their comments, but that is an interesting point alect. Somehow I doubt you'd be in that situation  .

I got the email today and apparently a donation of 250 points to a charity counts as activity so that's a relatively cheap way to keep your points active...

If you are prepared to click on a website pretending to answer questions for 5-10 minutes, you can earn miles on opinionplace.com; they offer 100-300 miles a survey undertaken.

You do have to say that you are a US resident to sign up these days , but is an easy way to keep an account ticking over

fortunately I have a US address which means it is easy to use AA shopping which is also a handy little points earner.
