Cellar Records, Wine Tracking, Tasting Notes - Spreadsheet vs. Apps or Programs?

Re: Wine Apps and/or Software

Just go download Cellar Tracker - they have an IOS and Android app as well as browser compatibility. The ability to add wines yourself. If you have a Wine Companion membership you can get the Haliday reviews and notes on all your bottles. It also allows people to update drinking windows and tasting notes as they drink the wine so you will be able to see how the wine is travelling in the bottle. The best part has to be the ability to generate reports, it is always scary running reports and realising my ban on collecting more from specific regions has failed (2014 Hunter i'm looking at you)

What I like about CT is, on the website version, the panel on the right-hand side that has the latest reviews (by others) of stuff you have in your cellar. Saves hunting for reviews, and it's always interesting to see what someone else has to say about something you already have in your collection. CT even have a Windows Phone version, for the diehards on that platform.

penegal, how are you going with CellarTracker? Last time I looked you didn't have any wine at all

I haven't quite gotten around to populating it yet.

There is probably a time management course you could do at adult Ed. ;)

Re: Wine Apps and/or Software

As per the other thread, I still use my pre-frontal cortex to access the data stored in the limbic system, but as that is failing, I am attempting to consolidate my spreadsheets onto cellar tracker.

Re: Wine Apps and/or Software

I use the free android app Kellermeister. It presents your database by any field and also imports and exports to CSV format for viewing in excel.
Most useful is the expiry date feature, shows you what you might like to start drinking up.

Thanks everyone. Looks like CellarTracker is the consensus. Have downloaded and looks pretty nice!!!

Most handles on CT are the same as here so feel free to send some friend requests :)

The CellarTracker app is okay, but I far prefer to use the CellarTracker web-site for any serious updates to my cellar. The web-site also makes it easy to see what others are saying about wines in your collection.

Great advice. I just changed my handle to match this AFF one. I won't be particularly active on it for a bit as I'm building a cellar into a new house and have limited controlled storage room at present. Can only buy as fast as I drink!!

I see. I did like the idea of scanning bottles in using the app. Would it be an option to do that and then update via the web site, or would the double handling negate the feature?

Both access types update your account - you can use the features you like in each

Yes, the scanning of bottles seemed like a good idea to me too when I joined up, but in reality I rarely use the feature. For me it's just so much easier to search for the existing wine in the overall database and then just add it to my cellar. But give it a try it out, you might be more tolerant of it than I am.

As steady says, your account is accessible via both pathways, so you can just pick and choose which suits you best at the time.

Thanks again DB. Final question, do most people use this app/site as free users, or is the premium paid service worth the $40 a year?

I pay a small amount per year because I use it a lot and think its worth it. I want the developer to be able to make a living and keep it going. The additional premium features are minimal and don't influence my reasons for paying. If you do wish to pay, it is totally up to you the amount. Can be $1 or $1,000,000.
