Hi all,
I was looking at using LAN J SYD-AKL-SYD and want to book on the LA site using LA flight numbers as it is so a lot cheaper. The only complication is that I'm based in CBR so would probably buy a red-e-deal for the domestic legs. (Can't book from CBR on LAN site). I understand that you are not protected in the case of delays when bookings are separate.

i don't really have the option to book them together unless I pay hundreds of dollars more and book via QF but I believe I can have them linked? It seems that LAN's TT flights are often delayed or cancelled. What kind of protection/rights would I have if I missed my connecting flight due to LAN's delay?

It's the risk you take; can you fly from CBR the night before?

Possibly, but I'm more worried about the other direction. If LAN delays their flight, what would my options be for the QF SYD-CBR leg? Would I have to buy a new ticket or would they look after me since they delay was on another oneworld airline? Would it make a difference if I linked bookings?

I think you may be OK. See oneworld - Separate Tickets

Refers to AA but I would think the same policy holds throughout OneWorld. Maybe...

It may be possible there are oneworld agreements in place which offer some protection in cases like the the lAN flight being delayed.

Really, it is up to you and how much risk you wish to take.

FWIW, any flight after 12pm SYD-CBR would likely be safe.

I've never had an issue with missed flights, Qantas always puts me on the next one. But in the case of CBR SYD AKL, I'd be on the first am flight out of CBR

LAN seemed pretty well versed in rebooking everyone onto Air NZ when our flight was cancelled. Air NZ flight was amazing, unfortunately our flight back from AKL was on time and not cancelled or anything (still a nice flight just not a lie flat bed like Air NZ was) but as Serfty said, allow a nice long stop over in Sydney and you should have plenty of time to rebook both sectors if anything goes amiss.
If everything runs on time you may be able to ask to move to an earlier flight at the airport but I think it's less stress to plan for a wait than to miss a flight and try to rebook.
