As discussed on TB-
Cathay to cut available award seats? - Traveling Better Forums

And based on this article-
Cathay Pacific is to set aside more free seats for its seasoned frequent fliers, under the latest proposal to revamp the award- winning airline's loyalty scheme.
The plan is to slash the number of free air tickets available for partner airlines and to reallocate those to Cathay's own Marco Polo Club members, sources close to the ongoing review say.
However, it is understood the number of points needed to redeem a flight will at the same time go up incrementally.

Not good news but inevitable when AA has cut premium cabin milesAAver awards on their own metal. Was just how long before partner airlines got annoyed enough to react.

You can use British Airways Avios however :)

Sure... and just how many points do we need for those...?

Of course, the idea from this announcement is that if one partner is restricted, all of them will be. Maybe as much as CX may like to be selective, that'll be very unlikely to happen, and if it does, you can bet your house there will be considerable expense in creating verbiage to cover up the rationale for such discrimination.

I guess time should have somewhat flagged that this was going to happen. That said, it may not be a total partner block...it may just be a case of only bookable within 14 days of departure, and only if yield decides to release any such unallocated seats (i.e. giving Asia Miles members plenty of time to potentially exhaust all award inventory).

Let me know what itinerary you're looking for and I'll check to see if its open here. Sometimes we have more availability here in the U.S that is not accessible in Australia.

Thanks

Sounds like CX maybe following the SQ model where long haul awards in premium cabins are simply not available to most star alliance partners (with one or two exceptions).

If you read what JohnNYC says about the issue it is very likely this will apply to all partners-BA and QF will have the same problems as those with AA.
It has not happened yet and it is not known when it will happen. But those who follow JohnNYC know that when he says something is certain it will happen.
There is also a thread on FT about this.

This is purely in response to some AAirlines flooding the maker with points.... Not that it's a bad thing because everyone ultimately benefits anyway.

It would be a shame to see CX price increases for gold/diamonds. Any increase would make CX the most expensive awards after qantas. It's not like Bulk amounts of Asia miles are available in hkg. In fact most credit cards in Aus can earn better than local hkg cards
