Cathay to cut worldwide capacity by 30% [Now 96%]

That means my father is gonna be taken to Christmas Island very soon.

He flew in only 2 weeks ago from Hong Kong, on a ETA subclass 601, which gives him "Up to 3 months at a time". How could he leave Australia even if he wants to?
Perhaps I don’t understand something - if your father is allowed in Australia for up to 3 months, what is preventing him taking the once a month flight that happens in the 3rd month of his visa?

Technically, flights are suspended until 22 January (i.e. 2 weeks from 8 Jan inclusive). The powers that be may permit flights after that, but who knows what will happen? CX is playing it safe with just the one flight, though even that one on the 28th could be at risk of the suspension continues.

If it's any indication, on the ground, the closure of certain venues (e.g. gyms) and curfews are now in place until a few days after the start of Chinese New Year (1 Feb) - basically lockdown 'lite'.

Edit: I spoke too soon. Yesterday, the flight ban was extended to 4 Feb. That one flight is going to be scrubbed.

Nothing technically, but you need to consider implications for the future.

The most immediate problem, is to get yourself a seat. For example, since he arrived at the beginning of Jan, he needs to be out of Australia by the beginning of April. The last CX flight to get him out legally would be 22 March. Any later, and he would be flying to Christmas Island instead. But what if this flight falls through because the pollies in Hong Kong need to continue with this blame shifting? My father would be straight to Christmas Island.

Secondly, if he just, I don't know, say, fly to Fiji then U turn back, he would technically be allowed back in, but it would be very obvious with what you are doing, and this could raise questions if he was to say, apply for a long term visa later.

It’s commonplace; I’ve worked in jobs where doing a regular visa run (out, new visa, and back) was part of the job. If he was looking at getting another 601 visa, he’d have to fly out, apply from Fiji and get it granted before returning. Not sure if the system, which has his departure date, would flag that. Maybe he could check with DHA or a migration agent on his options. DHA were allowing some concessions where people were genuinely stuck due to COVID restrictions.

hope it works out for him

Apologies for the offense caused. It was not my intent. I know a few friends in HK. Many (perhaps all) have an external passport to ‘flee’ but have not had a need to yet, despite all the pro-China policies being asserted in HK.

I acknowledge it would be tougher on those without an external passport.
apologies accepted... i do agree many have an external passport to flee but sadly some young adults do not have that opportunity - especially those under 18 at 1997 but their parents did NOT register them for the BNO (a type of British passport), now they are facing the consequences for their parents actions through no fault of their own making.

Not trying to take it off topic, Australia has reduced the qualification for HKers to migrate to Australia late last year. It is not like BNO but still a great offer. Considering UK is freezing cold I can see a number of them will be taking this option.

that is not off topic in my opinion... in fact that is an organised effort by both UK & Australia as per past agreements before 1997 handover... As to CX, a flight staff member is charged for breaking quarantine rules, but this same rule did NOT apply to a birthday party involving Pro CCP people which involves the chief of police, chief of immigration, chief of anti corruption commission! what rule is that in HK?

A bit like the rules in the UK.

Just had another email from CX trying to keep interest alive, which began "Dear Oatek, while travel remains limited, we've been working on making your future travel plans even more flexible."

Limited - how about non-existent when it comes to HKG.

What were they trying to sell you?

I'm sure the CCP will trawl all that. They've previously and unsubtly scrutinised my linkedin profile.

Gday

Mate i am pretty sure you can get that extended without leaving Australia. My elderly family member landed in Australia in early February 2020 on a visa type 600 which is basically a three month single visit tourist visa.

I just got back from Sydney airport tonight after dropping her off to fly home. She stayed for just under two years. We got the initial visa extended twice with the second extension expiring today. Was a relatively painless task if you follow the rules and provide the required documents.

Thanks.
Pele.

Just on that account, ask them for a copy of their data protection policy and the interaction of that policy with the National Security Law of the HKSAR.
If they will let you these days is a big question

I'm nervous about my CX J award in June to Europe. Just looked at CX's schedules for March and they are barely flying any long haul into europe/Australia except for a handful of days.
