Cathay to cut worldwide capacity by 30% [Now 96%]

Flight suspension has changed from 14 days to 7 days:

Starting from April 1, if a flight is found to have three or more passengers who test positive for Covid-19 upon arrival, the airline will be banned from operating that route into Hong Kong for seven days.

Clearly businesses have spoken and scared the "powers that be"
The fact is that even 1/2 of foreign businesses are planning to leave hkg... reported by CNN... yes it is CNN, BUT the story is based on a research from European chamber of commerce in hkg... I doubt many will return even after the pandemic, due to HK NSL, the decoupling of chinazi and xitler on Russian war, abuse of human rights in hkg, xinjiang and taiwan

Publication | EuroCham Survey on the impact of Covid-19 on the business community - this is the research report

Businesses were starting to move their Asian HQs to Singapore pre pandemic.

Because of the way they have managed the pandemic that movement has accelerated for many reasons.

Too little too late?
It IS too little too late… don’t forget the western world IS decoupling with Chinazi and Xitler due to many issues and disputes - for CX, it WILL be a slow and painful death… the west won’t trust a Chinese carrier, hkers don’t trust them cause of pro ccp stance! This airline is doomed

There will be a segment that resumes transiting through HK/CX.

Whether its too late depends on whether that segment is enough to sustain the airline's financial position.

...and also whether the HK government is truly done with covid restrictions affecting international transit/travel

The government could do it, if they want to. Just look at how Singapore government had been holding transit passengers from high risk countries in holding pen at the airport.

I would not be comfortable transiting via HKG in the short term due to political reasons (especially when I'm Chinese ethnically); but I know I would rather transit in HKG over SIN if I'm white, depends on where about is my final destination.

I am the same - SIN is a slightly better option as the government is not the most trusted because the SIN govt do support chinese government in some aspects... for people in hkg with high political risk, Singapore is the best option of the remaining options... if given other options like driect travel to EU then transfer to UK... this is better

Sorry if I strayed off topic...

Why is transiting HKG preferable over SIN if you are 'white'?

HK national security law - to those with chinese ancestry, the chinese government is more likely to kidnap you, "extradite" you to mainland big 6 (china) for so call crimes - real reason is your anti ccp views overseas, then sentence you for a long term imprisonment if not execution

I know this because I am chinese origin, and anti ccp in australia...

right, so as a European (and may be what you call 'white') I really shouldn't have to worry about transiting SIN

Actually if you are European, or (white as you may call) - HKG is safe for you unless you are anti ccp... SIN is preferable for chinese ancestry especially hkers than hkg itself... sorry for the confusion caused...

🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️right, so as a European (and may be what you call 'white') I really shouldn't have to worry about transiting SIN
I think there is confusion here.

I was talking about transiting in HKG.

Just like if you were in China. If you are 'white', you are more likely to get deported than detained, and if you are detained, you are generally treated better than the Chinese prisoners.

In the eyes of the Chinese government, you are a Chinese citizen as long as you are of Chinese ancestry (yellow face), regardless of what nationalities you hold.

This is why I would avoid HKG in the near term.

Sorry if I strayed off topic...

I don't think this is off topic.

This is exactly the problem with CX. It is not easy to avoid transiting via HKG. SIN is further for many destinations, and what's worse: HKG or DXB 🤷‍♂️

Not really to be honest - especially with the current political climate, it may be more of a hinderance than a benefit... thats why for CX, even if they want to focus the foreigner market, I personally would NOT recommend this airline to ANYONE!

it is okay and for the record, i also would NOT recommend you to transit via HKG under ANY circumstance, foreigners could be held hostage too, if you remember, 2 Canadians were held hostage in china because canada and china relations deterioated. (2 Michaels case, detained, "charged and convicted for espionage" just because canada held Meng Wenzhou - Huawei CFO for extradition request to usa, detained from 2018 to 2021)
