Cathay Pacific To Relaunch Their Business Class — Civil Aviation Forum | Airliners.net
Cathay Pacific is follow in the footsteps of US Airways by introducing the Sicma Aero Seat "Cirrus" seat which was designed in conjunction with JPA Design. These seats will replace the current, narrow, long haul Business Class seats which were introduced by Cathay Pacific a few years ago. The seats, which have been described by some as akin to a "coffin", are the legacy of the the airline's former Product Manager who left the airline shortly after their roll-out (reportedly due to passenger feedback). I attended the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2010 in Hamburg. Here are a few pictures of one possible interation of the seat (airlines of course can customise the seat to a point to meet their customers' needs.

If the current CX Long Haul business class 'coffins' are anything like the current AirNZ Business Premium Product - I say bring it on!

I didn't mind the coffins, but there's no question these are an improvement - almost reminiscent of their F product.

Well every time I went past those J seats I always thought myself that they were really suffering there .....

I don't have a problem with them at LEAST THEY ARE FLAT compared to the sloping Qantas cough in 747's.
Cathay to HK then London for me.

It was announced some time back that Qantas is refitting their 747s to have fully lie flat J class seats. I for one will also be glad about that - though still prefer the overall benefits of the A380s.

Good news. I disliked the coffin flights. One more booked this year so far. CX has better service and customer focus than QF flights but those seats are so claustrophia inducing. It seems like not much roomier than a Y seat.

Considering BNE, my nearest CX airport still occasionally flies the old regional seat equipment I wonder if and when they will introduce the new seating to this route. Years I guess.

That seat layout in the picture looks like they’d fit less J seats in the cabin than their current layout. Not good for prices.

Don't be too harsh - some of us (with a little bit of ingenuity) can still sleep on a flat slope.

In saying that, a flat bed is always better, but the CX herringbone seats were a little cramped like any other herringbone seat; worse during sleeping in some cases because of no air vents (means little movement of air, ensuing a stuffy sleep).

Interestingly, I guess CX can stop paying royalties to VS for using their seat design now. This new type certainly looks promising!

Well the seats sloped one way, and the a/c points up a little as it flies along right, so wouldn’t that make the seats effectively flat? :p

Wont they just have to pay someone else?

*sigh* Don't start.

There is an optimal way to sleep on a slope (think a recliner chair), but if you don't like it then you don't like it (and only flat will do).

It begs to reason that if herringbones like CX, NZ, AC and VS are "coffins", what does that make of BA CW (ying-yang)?

Missile tubes? ;)

I liked my coffin too! Especially upstairs in a 744 where they are extra long... Suits my 6' 3" self.

I didn't think the coffins upstairs looked longer than those downstairs.

It may give that illusion because there are only two columns of them (one aisle) compared to the main deck which has four columns of them (two aisles).

Thet aren't but your long legs can stick out into the aisle.Fine for the sleeper but if you want to go to the loo and you are in the front of upstairs it is a real hassle.I am certainly one who disliked them.

If by a little bit of ingenuity, you're referring to a scotch or three, sure ;)

I personally have never had an issue sleeping on the sloping Skybeds, as always, YMMV..

Due to an NDA I can’t reveal all, but Cathay has been giving bonus miles to frequent flyers to test designs very similar to the one pictured in Cathay City. Can’t provide any more details than that sorry. Well, not here at least ;)
