Travelling from PER to BNE yesterday and was chatting with a flight attendant about various things. I said I was going BNE/HKG via Cathay later this year because Virgin Atlantic had stopped flying SYD/HKG earlier in the year. He replied that that would be fine since Virgin now have (or shortly will be) instituting code share with Cathay. I cant see anything about this on-line, wondering if anyone had heard about these new arrangements?

"the enemy of my enemy is my friend" ;)

theres been talk of virgin and cx for a few years now trying to work something out - would be good if they do although nothing has been announced as yet. im not sure how a codeshare would work given CX probably wouldnt want VA metal going to HKG and VA have been looking at trying to get their Asian network sorted (or started even) for awhile now.

I dunno, given SQ has a significant shareholding of VA and seem to have a... let's call it competitive relationship with CX, I'm not sure I can see this happening!

Thanks for the replies. Seems like there is nothing definite, the flight attendant I was talking to was quite certain about it & I questioned him because it would perfect for me. I know that SQ fly to HKG but it is via Singapore so the BNE/SIN/HKG gets in at something like 10pm whereas the CX flight (BNE/CNS/HKG) arrives around 6pm, much nicer & both leave around the same time in the morning. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it comes to fruition before my trip.

'If' it happens it will be good news for us however how will Qantas react considering they are both part of 'One World'. As well will this then give us reciprocal rights with 'Dragon Air' which will be even better.

Codeshares do not maketh alliances, I would not read too much into it and if anything, it would be like the HA tie up I suspect.

VA has Southeast Asia covered with SQ. They lack a partner in North Asia. People don't generally go via SIN with other more direct and cheaper options available. CX seems like a logical partner to cover North Asia in particular China. Just look at NZ's alliance strategy. They have SQ alliance (just approved) for Southeast Asia and CX alliance for China to co-exist. The same could definitely happen to VA. Would SQ object? Well, they don't have a problem with NZ working with CX. Since the new CEO came on board, SQ has changed its attitude towards working with partners including some closer relationship with CA (and its subsidiary ZH) within Star Alliance. CA happens to be the part owner of CX. There were even rumours about CX considering leaving oneworld for Star. This would be really exciting if true.

You heard it from a flight attendant, that alone should tell you it's unlikely. FA's know nothing but rumours abound and the bored individuals often just make stuff up to pass the time.

Ahh, Galley FM. I would expect VA to institute their own BNEHKG flights before code sharing with CX - and I don't see them running flights in to HKG any time soon. :)
