Cathay Pacific flight aborts take-off in Hong Kong - 11 injured

I imagine that the pilots had a lot of things on their mind all at once. Takeoffs happen all the time but rejected takeoffs must surely be rare creatures encountered mostly in sims.
In well over 20,000 hours of heavy jet flying, I only ever did one high speed abort. And even then it was a lot slower than these guys. A few very low speed, but it doesn’t really count at less than 50 knots.

While it’s monstrous to suggest that money would impact crew decisions on safety, contemplating a financial shortfall can hardly have helped maintain an atmosphere of equanimity.
It wouldn’t have crossed anyone’s mind. Not before they got inside the terminal anyway. On the other hand Cathay has been at war with its staff for years, so I’m sure they’d expect a poor level of support (i.e. none) from the company.

My take outs from this incident are that the deploying of the slide seems to me to hint at a level of panic (provided it remains the case that it was not ordered by the pilots) and that overall Cathay is not the airline that for many years was my primary carrier. Along with the war on staff and several people I know who have left the airline through that and the tensions with China, we have decided to continue avoiding this once much loved airline and HKG even as a transit point. Others have business and family links that will draw them back, but not sure we will get back to Cathay for a lone time if ever.

sadly it is not just this airline that had suffered due to the tension with China, but the city as a whole 😢
