Cash or Card? Countries where you still need cash.

I know this post is rude, but there is an "International ATM Operator Fees" wiki page on Whirlpool. It would be good if people check that before asking, and also to update it when they come back from their trips.
Unfortunately, that wiki isn’t infallible and only as good as the input.

I refer to it routinely but can be just plain wrong.

Also, the reliance on Westpac cards is confusing since you might dodge an ATM fee but they charge 3%.

It is referring to Westpac group customers doing withdrawals at Global ATM Alliance ATMs.

I dont use such a card.
Don’t bother. 3% forex fee even though they waive the ATM fee…

I do have the WBC travel money card linked to a dormant WBC account for a worst case scenario when I need cash but 3% is less than ATM imposed fees in non WBC cards.

I use Macquarie debit at any high street bank in UK, with a big BUT. Take care to use the ATM at a bank branch only. I got fleeced at a shopping centre ATM which was clearly marked with a high street bank logo. Following that I did a forensic audit and went to three branches. All of them spat out money at less than 0.5% within the spot rate.

I have had couple of visits to Budapest recently. No need for cash.

On my last visit to CA I needed cash for the local bus. I swapped to the hop on/off bus and paid with card. So handy to have a few CAD.
