Carry-on luggage to/from USA

I am travelling BNE-SYD-SFO & return in J in January.
Qantas (http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/beforeYouTravel/baggageCarryOn) advises that

Carry on baggage limits have changed for passengers travelling within and from the US, due to government regulations. Passengers may only carry on one bag plus a personal item - such as a purse, briefcase, backpack or similar - per passenger.

Given this "one bag plus a briefcase" rule, would I get away with taking both a normal cabin bag (within the 115cm limit) plus a normal-sized laptop bag (about 79cm)?

I can't comment on SYD-SFO, but SFO-SYD you will have no problems in SFO
