I carry a suit bag most times now unless having to take site visit clothing (safety clothing) with me.
I check it in.
Lets face it, if your garment bag (I am assuming a suit bag) gets squashed - its your own fault. It should be checked luggage - if it wont fit in the gauge it shouldn't be in the cabin, it should be checked. The allowance for oversized luggage and the blatent disregard for fellow PAX by people carting "cabin bags" and "suit bags" that way exceed dimension just pi$%*s me off...
Then have the audacity to complain because I wont let people move my laptop wheely bag to let them store their bag..... grrrrrrrrr :evil::evil::!: or because it gets squashed.
Zero tollerance for oversized luggage I say!

No, I don't believe it is my fault.
Perhaps I should have been more clear. When I said garment bag I meant a "non-rigid garment bag", the kind clearly permitted by QF as cabin baggage and one that does fit in the gauge; there is no requirement for me to check it in as there is no violation of the dimensions.
I agree that those who bring small suitcases on board are inconveniencing passengers and there should be zero tolerance for oversized luggage - mine doesn't fall into that category.
And if I place my jacket or garment bag or anything else slightly 'fragile' on the bottom of an empty locker because I'm one of the first to board I fail to see how that's asking for trouble. It shouldn't be a huge stretch for those who board after - and especially those with their suitcases - to politely place their 15kg bag on the bottom and move my 1-2kg item on top.
