Carry on Baggage - allowances abused to save!

...

Is it possible for every person on a 738 (168 passengers) to have a maximum sized wheelie carry-on bag and able to store it in the overhead bins provided? I think the airlines would struggle to cope if everyone had 2 carry-on items. ...
Of course it isn't possible - have a look at the USA.

However, overall (and even domestically) Qantas make more money out of selling the hold spaces for freight than PAX's luggage so there are no bean counters having issues if the overhead bins are full.

Wife and I invested in the very lightest 105cm wheely bags avail and kept the weight to 7kgs for our 6 week trip to France last year, Y on SIA , after previously being burdened by heavier bags and trying to lug them around train stations and up and down stairs.

At BNE, the check in girl stood up and looked over the counter to see if we had any other bags when we said "no checked bags", and had us weigh our carry ons. Then downstairs, we were weighed again, and had a "well done" compliment from the bloke there.

On the way home the check-in bloke at CDG, when we waved our bags at him, said in that beautiful Franglaise "but you av been in France, an you did not buy anytheeng? He weighed us anyway and because we had put our coats into the bags this time, we had hit 9kg but he was unconcerned.

So in one trip we were weighed 3 times, but it was worth the effort of washing our smalls in the sink every night, in order to avoid waiting at retrievals and travelling easier.

So mayhewga exactly what are the very lightest 105cm wheelie bags-mrsdrron wants one.

So are the airlines providing misleading information when they advertise that you can bring 2 pieces (within guidelines and weight restriction) on board?

Are they basing it on one in the overhead and one under the seat in front? (If in the overhead, as others have said, forget it!)

Not at all - the bean counters want as little checked luggage as possible; how 2 piece allowance works overall is not their issue. (Standard deviation and all that)

Antler Zero at 2.6kg , but I see they have reduced that down to 2.4kg now. They cost around $200, but our friends who travelled with us got their's at Myer on sale for a lot less.

I bought an Antler Translite 46 x 35 x 20cm, 34L capacity and weighing only 2.1kg 3+ years ago and it's still going strong. Paid just over $100 for it in the Myer sale.

I believe they're still available.

So it doesn't appear we have missed anything. She would really like the Rimowa salsa air in purple which is 2.4KG but very expensive here.Should have got it when transitting HEL-for some reason was very mush cheaper there.
And by the way welcome.A few of us sunny coasters here.I'm from just up the Nicklin Way in beautiful Wurtulla.

It may well be their issue if it gets to the stage where everyone takes carry-on inside aircraft but not enough overhead bin space so have to stow it in hold causing delays, aircraft turnaround, cancelled flights, decrease revenue etc etc.

:p

Well ... do tell ... maybe even data from both before NGCI and after .... ;)
Wish I did have data from before and after NGCI. You will have to take my word for it that my experiences with checked luggage retrieval over the past 3 years have been quite good apart from the usual 5-6 times where the luggage has missed the flight.

Again tonight in SYD even better than last week.

10:14pm - Touch down, call home
10:18pm - Arrive at gate
10:21pm - Start disembarking
10:21pm - Arrive at carousels downstairs
10:27pm - Luggage belt is switched on and first ba appears
10:29pm - My bag comes out as the 51st bag
10:30pm - Outside waiting for pick-up
10:45pm - Brother arrives to pick me up and on our way home

This time <10 for luggage to arrive on carousel from time aircraft arrived at gate. Am I havng a good run? I am afraid I am being spoilt and I have to commute any other city pair I will be extremely disappointed.

That was good. perhaps I should have followed my inclination and put it more crudely. Either way U B F.....

I was on a BNE/DRW flight recently when a guy in row 27 accidentally knocked a woman on the head when he took his cabin bag out of the overhead locker (not sure how heavy it was).

The woman stepped off the aircraft then collapsed in the aerobridge. Ambulance called & she was taken to hospital but I understand she was released 3 hours later.

One more data point for SYD-BNE last Sunday and the quickest by far that I have been able to arrive at my apartment after a flight.

7:27pm - Touch down (8 minutes early)
7:30pm - Arrive at gate
7:32pm - Start disembarking
7:37pm - Arrive at carousel downstairs and my bag is already going around so grab it without stopping and make a run for Coachtrans
7:38pm - At Coachtrans booking ticket for 7:40pm service and I am the only passenger on that service
~8:15pm - In my apartment unpacking

I must be having a good run!

Luggage in SYD last night was a breeze as well.

It is great for you, rather envious in fact. But I do think you're travel times might have something to do with it. 10pm-ish into SYD and 7pm-ish on Sunday into BNE. I can't imagine there would be many flights at those times. I think at similar times other city pairs would work just as well.

I'm not complaining, as it is my choice to not fly at similar times. I like to have minimal time away, e.g. I would rather have Sunday night at home.

And that is why we are all different and have different experiences.

I would love to have Sunday night at home as well but it would almost be impossible for me to get up at 4:00am on a Monday morning to get to BNE by ~9:00am and then put in an 8 hour work day as well. Just not worth it.

Yep it is rather hard doing that into SYD each week ;) :D
