Cardiologists could put themselves out of business

Previous advice was one to two glasses of red wine a day, I think I'll stick with that ;)

One of the Cardiac surgeons in Brisbane is vegetarian.he tells his patients they should be.
I sent an old farmer from western QLD to have his bypass. On his return to see me he recounted the dietary advice he was given-"the doc told me he had only done this bypass surgery on 3 vegetarians. So I thought for a moment then told him he should be worried. He asked me why so I told him I reckoned he was the only remaining vegetarian in QLD that hadn't had a bypass.

I reckon the good surgeon was telling his patient that his surgeries are done predominantly on non-vegetarians.

The vegetarians die of malnutrition before they make it to the cardiologist.

You should all have been watching the SBS show on healthy living that was on tonight. It mentioned the Oxford Ohio study on aging. They interviewed the over 50s in the town in 1975.Although the study ended in 1995 other reseachers have gone back and searched the death records.Conclusion-those who are optimistic about aging lived an average of 7.6 years longer than those who are miserable.
So as the song goes-don't worry,be happy.
By the way this increase in life span is greater than that which may be gained by being a vegetarian.

I was on a vegan diet once many years ago for 7 weeks.

I ended up with some sort of bacterial infection in the stomach. Never again.

I doubt there's a causal relationship there JohnK but I think overall a vegan diet is a serious commitment which isn't easy to do.

I am not going to argue with you but in my defence it is hard to convince myself otherwise and I am guessing I was very weak during that 7 week stretch which could have contributed. My immune system is not that great at the best of times.

Anyway I achieved what I wanted to achieve and will think twice about myself in that situation again.

Plant based diets - they are the kind of thing you only attempt when there is a compelling reason or strong momentum to want to change. I have been 90% committed to pursuing being a vegetarian of late, and have noticed improvements in energy, clarity of skin and mind, uplifted mood in general, and savings at the supermarket. It's only been 4 weeks, and now I can stand back and assess the sheer amount of meat I was consuming morning, noon and night. Having said that - old habits die hard and cheat meals are in order. Only so much you can cook with lentils or have another bowl of dahl soup (don't get me started on the gas and bloating). I go the caesar salad with prawns, prosciutto and egg once a week and it is a godsend!

People are like aircraft; when we are brand new we can do and go anywhere we please. And people want to ride us all the time! As we age, we require heavy C and D grade maintenance checks, a few re-fits (hopefully not in the style of Qs' enhancements), break down a lot more and end up frustrating people. Knocking meat off your shopping list is a great way to claw back a few years and feel more alive within yourself, harking back to our golden era. This should be tempered with the wisdom that we can't play/party/smoke/drink/eat meat like we used to in our 20s without their being a coughulative effect on our health overall. It will give you a few more productive years in service before we are all shipped off to Victorville. I have an exception to that rule -- when i do fly business or first class I will eat and drink anything i want as it is a privilege and something special. Life is a one way ticket, so best to live it your way and what makes you happy. See you in the graveyard!
