I just tried booking a return flight Hobart to Krabi, and after filling everything in and then clicked pay, it says sorry flights have rescheduled,go to start again, after doing this about 20 times I give up, so then I go on chat eventually get a human have to type everything in to him and wait ages then he says they can’t book the first sector from Hobart to Melbourne as it’s not operated by them. What on earth is this, never had this happen before.

I don’t understand why they have the flights on there then if that’s the case.
International airlines often don't file fares for HBA and other regional locations - what could have happened is they perhaps only did a deal for feeder flights with a partner for a few mainland cities...then maybe a mis-match between fare filing team and website team meant HBA was left on as searchable but without a fare to price. Fare only validates at time of 'commit' not during the booking flow.

MH may not have the rights to sell tickets from tassie, that’s why we have travel agents
I tried to replicate the OP’s search… If starting from HBA you can even enter KVB or HKT (or even KUL). It just says ‘city not recognised’.

However they do sell fares to Saudi Arabia! QF to MEL and MH onwards.

I would use google flights to find available fares for sale ex HBA. Singapore Airlines had a great fare for $1200, Jetstar for around $1000.
