Hi just a quick question. Can you book a return flight with an economy one way and return leg in business class. the Qantas web site will not allow me to do this. Any hints. The flight is to Tokyo return. If I book single legs only the return flight is directed to the Japanese site and the prices for business class are twice as expensive.

I can’t view it at the moment ‘cos I’m in the middle of something, and the purpose of this is undoubtedly advertising so apologies if it’s useless … but there’s a Flight Centre informercial on YouTube which has a title which infers it may answer your question.

Generally speaking, no.

More info here: Qantas mixed cabin return flight?

As you can see in the screenshot posted by the OP in that thread, you can sometimes book economy return, and on the next page in the booking process it'll let you upgrade one leg to Premium Economy. Sometimes in my experience it'll offer Business too.

If that option is not presented, then you may be able to book it by calling up. However, the fares must allow combination which you can't really know unless you have access to e.g. ExpertFlyer. More info in this post: Qantas mixed cabin return flight?

If they don't allow combining, it will book as two one-ways (and be significantly more expensive), which would be functionally the same as the pricing you're seeing above.
