Can redeem 2 seperate flights, but not a 'direct' flight - any ideas why?

Hi All
I can redeem J class from MEL - SIN, then SIN to KIX(Osaka) seperately using points.

But when I try and do it direct MEL - KIX only a waitlist option comes up. They are all the same flights. It's cheaper by about 20,000 points doing it in one go.

Any ideas why this is happening?

It's called 'married segment logic' and many airlines use it to sell fares based on complex factors. Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific also come to mind.

Basically, the airline doesn't want to sell any more tickets X-Y-Z in your desired fare class (e.g. business class award seat). But there may still be availability from X-Y and Y-Z, which can only be booked separately or sometimes, together with a stopover of more than 24 hours.

Ahh ok thanks, so either cough up and pay the extra 20k points , or try and add a stopover and see if that works? cheer's I'll check it out!

Just had to do this today.

Redeemed 2 pax in J direct but for the 3rd pax it was showing as waitlist so split it up and booked the same flights separately... Win!

When you split it, was the points cost a little more expensive?

Yeah was a little more. But was worth being on the same flights as the rest of the family. Still saver though so worth it
