Yesterday I was able to find 2 F seats on the non-stop EK flight SYD-DXB so jumped at the opportunity and booked them like this:
SYD-DXB EK F
DXB-KHI EK J
I am based in MEL but if I had put MEL in the origin, it would not show me the SYD-DXB flights, only EK flights from PER/ADL. I tried doing it as a multi-city but that increased the price and also strangely did not show the EK F seats! I rang up while I was on the payment page of the booking and the QF agent couldn't see the 2 F seats so I just went ahead and booked it as above. She said I should be able to ring back and 'add' the extra leg.
Today I rang up and asked if I could add a MEL-SYD leg for the previous day (within 24 hours so it wouldn't be considered a stop-over) and was told the total points cost would increase because the distance would take me to zone '9'. Also the change fee was quoted as 3500 points per passenger and $80 per passenger service fee.
I did the calculations using gcmap and I believe the agent was correct about the mileage increase. The additional leg pushes it into zone 9.
What are my options? Book a separate classic award MEL-SYD? Wait for a DSC and then book as JASA or simply use AA to book MEL-SYD for two in J for 35k?
Thoughts?
