Can baggage be checked straight through less than 24 hrs Stopover

At BUD you could still have through checked your bag to JNB but if they only gave you boarding passes as far as MRU you'd just need to get your BP for the last sector while in transit in MRU. You don't always receive boarding passes up to the last sector of your final destination but that doesn't mean you bags can't be through checked all the way.

Ahhh. Thank you. I didn't know that.

When I checked in at LHR in the morning for my 3pm overnight flight to MRU (arriving 7am, departing for JNB 3.30pm) the staff couldn't check me in for the MRU-JNB flight. Three agents tried and failed. They suggested that prior to my boarding my flight LHR-MRU that I go to the service desk and see if they could check me in as it would then be less than 24 hours to the MRU-JNB departure. Two agents there also failed, though. However, one said she would "telex Mauritius" and have someone meeting me at the gate on arrival with my new boarding pass.

Anyway, my flight to MRU was delayed a little so I jumped on ba.com and tried to check myself in for the MRU-JNB flight which I was surprisingly able to do, even printing my boarding pass. But on arrival at MRU the paper boarding pass wouldn't suffice and I had to wait for a BA (contracted) staff member to issue the standard boarding pass before I was able to go through the transfer area.

A similar thing happens in DRW quite a bit when pax who've been working in East Timor head back home to Brazil. They often fly DRW QF x/SYD LA x/SAN LA GRU so bags are checked from DRW to GRU (Sao Paolo) but they might only get boarding passes DRW/SYD/SAN so would need to see the LA service desk in SAN for that last boarding pass.

For any situation like this it's important to have your baggage receipt handy with the weight as the checkin agent at the downline port would need to enter the tag details into the system when they checkyou in so baggage details are recorded against your name.
