Can baggage be checked straight through less than 24 hrs Stopover

Leaving to HKG on CX, I want to spend the night, however I believe I can have have the bags interlined through to Mel, if the stopover is less than 24 hrs so I only need to be concerned with hand carry whole in honkers.

Is someone in a position to confirm this?

I believe you can. However I note that QF refused to interline for an overnight (less than 24 hour) stay when I flew MEL - SIN, connecting on CX to BKK the next day.

Worse case scenario - doesn't CX allow check-in 24 hours ahead - can always check in bags as soon as you arrive then head into town.

Thanks, flying out of honkers on QF30, so worst case if they cant interline for 24hours at origin, collect bags and check in, in not allowed take them into town and do it there.

I had a ~16:00 hour QF-> QF connection in HKG (admittedly not overnight) and the bags were checked through no problem. Went to Dorsett Kowloon hotel to get some sleep.

QF may not want to accept responsibilty for storing checked bags overnight at overseas airports.

What is your city of origin? Is it possible to find out locally from CX or contractor who does their checkin at that city (airport staff not reservations). Maybe get their number & call them as it's better to speak to the actual people who will be checking you in.

Some ports will only thru check you if your transit time does not exceed 8 hours which wouldn't suit in your case.

Does anyone know if CX have a downtown checkin at a city office or are there designated hotels where you can checkin for your CX flight?

At worst, collect luggage and take the Airport Express downtown. Go straight to the next level for in town check in and check in for your next flight out. IIRC, you are allowed to check in up to 24 hrs out. Both QF and CX have check in counters there.

Do you have any colleagues flying out prior to you that could ask CX staff at MNL for you or are you able call the CX Airport Manager yourself and ask so you know ahead of time.

I worry too much about long time frames between flights - I have always been too paranoid to check the bags through if staying overnight with concern that something will stuff up - we have probably all experienced the hassles of when your baggage did not end up being on your flight - if this is a homeward flight, then this is not such an issue.

These days, I never ask for ride from HKIA because the Airport Express is so damn efficient and more comfortable than being holed up in the back of a car in traffic. I don't bother with the free buses to the hotel at the other end and hop into a cab for the short ride to whatever hotel has been booked. My bag and hand luggage is arranged so that I do not have to touch the main bag at all. Next day, you check in at Hong Kong or Kowloon station and go on the train without your bags and with boarding pass in hand - quite a relaxing journey. .

I know the question was about interlining but taking your bags at Honkers is not really a hassle to justfy the risk IMHO.

A similar question (Sprucegoose, apologies if I've hijacked your thread before you've got resolution): I'm departing Budapest at about 6pm for Heathrow, then departing the next day about 3pm, both on BA. Will BA check my bags through (and so shall I include PJs in the carry-on) or will I have to claim and re-check the next day? When flying SFO-LHR-TLV I asked to check my bags through to only LHR when I had about a 12 hour layover but the BA agent at SFO said she had to through check because "it's less than 24 hours".

My case may be complicated in that I'll be flying Budapest-Heathrow-Mauritius-Johannesburg (all with less than 24 hours between the flights meaning it would need to be a 'long tag'.

An update everyone, CX has checked bags all through to MEL in MNL an hour ago, and QF have kindly upgraded me to J for the HKG-MEL leg tomorrow. So that answers those questions.

So, with that in mind, I asked to be checked to Heathrow only which wasn't a problem. The agent then printed my boarding pass to Heathrow and to Mauritius but she couldn't issue the boarding pass for Mauriritus-Johannesburg. This made me think that, after all that, the agent probably wouldn't have been able to through check all the way to Johannesburg.

At BUD you could still have through checked your bag to JNB but if they only gave you boarding passes as far as MRU you'd just need to get your BP for the last sector while in transit in MRU. You don't always receive boarding passes up to the last sector of your final destination but that doesn't mean you bags can't be through checked all the way.

A couple of other things to note is that even on a booking that is all in the one pnr, while there may be an interline baggage agreement from BA to SA or MK it doesn't necessarily mean the airline checking you in is able to issue the boarding passes.

This can be due to either there being no agreement in place between those airlines for boarding pass issue/checkin (baggage no problem though) or maybe there is an agreement but the carrier downline may not yet have opened your MRU/JNB flight for checkin at the time you checked in at BUD.
