Apparently the day this was filmed was nearing 40 celsius, reducing performance of the aircraft - don't have the source to hand at the moment though.
 
Unfortunately the comments in the video thread itself don't shed too much light on what happened. There was some reference to the engines not being as efficient on hot days. If I get some decent source I'll post links. Thanks all for your responses.
 
The description (below) on the youtube link actually says Canberra Airport. Don't know what MSL means but I'd guess 1888' refers to the old runway length.

"The video 'Illushin Using It All' was taken from the control tower at Canberra Airport (in Australia) -- which from memory is 1888 feet MSL Interestingly, they have now extended the end of the runway that the plane is taking off towards by another 400 meters I believe. To allow even take-offs with a 5 hour fuel load on a 100 degree day!"
