So what's the story with cabin crew filling row 3 & 4 lockers?

Tonight had a very snappy cabin supervisor snarl at 3 of 6 pax sitting in row 3 about their bags ... Problem was that the bins above rows 3 and 4 were basically full with cabin crew bags!

I was early on and got my bag up but that was it ...

The snap dragon got particularly steamed when pax in 3A put their bag in the completely empty J locker.

Wonder why they choose to inconvenience those supposedly sitting in premium seats rather than putting them down the back????

Clearly in need of some company direction.

I've noticed this on a few recent flights but had just assumed it was that particular crew that was using those lockers.... maybe its a more wide spread problem.

Either way, filling the entire locker with crew luggage is not acceptable as it leaves no room for Row 3+4 luggage.

I have seen the crew bags in the row 3/4 locker but not the bad attitude only the usual helpfulness. The former is a bit of a pain, but the latter would really annoy me.

VA have been dong that for as long as I can remember, I am not sure where else they can put them without upsetting someone.

Before NZ converted their Trans Tasman 320's to all economy crews were easily able to store their bags over the first few rows and a small wardrobe.

After the 8 business class seats and a bulkhead containing the wardrobe were removed they simply continued to store their bags over the first few rows.

This caused real problems for those passengers paying extra for up front and works-deluxe seats as those in rows 1,2 & even 3 were not able to store their carry ons above them even if they were among the first passengers to board. What made it even worse was the 1A/B/C seats were an exit row abutting the 1L door and bags had to go up top.

Eventually an edict came down from management after complaints from such HVC's that crews were only permitted to store their bags over the last rows of the cabin - better to annoy those down the back than those in front.

This met with some surprising resistance from some crew but eventually became the norm.

Going to be a problem for all airlines until aircraft manufacturers build storage space for crew baggage, given that on VA B737s Row 3 you cant store hand luggage at your feet then it follows that above Row 3 is the exact wrong spot to put crew luggage, as is above the exit rows. I have rarely seen a VA B737 J cabin full and and quite often seen crew luggage in there - which fair enough, but I suspect that down the back is where they will be mandated to be in the future. Its a bad habit that annoys your high value customers and its not like they can leave the aircraft until all the passengers have disembarked anyway...

I sat in 1A on a Trans Tasman A320 on Friday and the bins were all full by the time I got on board. The crew were really good at getting my and my friends bags into an overhead and retrieving them as soon as we reached the gate at AKL.

I do not think its fair to blame the aircraft manufacturers. The cabin fit-out is defined by the operating airline, not by the manufacturer. Its up to the operating airline to design their cabin layout to be suitable for their type of operations.

Thanks for the thread, it has reminded me about feedback I bed to seen into VA.

It's actually very easy. A) don't put them above rows that must use the overhead lockers - 1, 3, exit rows. B) don't put all the crew bags together above the same row - space them out a bit.

To make it worse, the front OHSB over row 1A/B/C has emergency gear in it and cannot be used for PAX stuff.

This used to be kept in storage compartments attached to to removed bulkhead wardrobe unit.

It's not ideal
