Buying Status with QFF points?

Status

However, if it was fairly likely that I could purchase close to 450 SCs through spending 120,000 - and cancelling the existing Status Run - then I'd seriously consider that.
It's not purchasing SCs. You don't get any SCs from the offer if it's given and you accept it. You just get to retain status even though you didn't reach the SC target and give up the points QF requests for the privilege.
How widespread is the practice of offering the option to purchase status?
It's at QF's discretion. Nice to have the offer if provided but I wouldn't count on it.
so if this is a pretty sporadic offer, I'll stick with my original approach.
That's the safer option.

I'd do the status run if I were you. Why risk it? Especially since you've already stated you wish to use OWE privileges for your extensive travels ahead.

It's at QF's discretion. Nice to have

Sorry, my bad wording as to *effect* of purchasing status and it’s *equivalent value* of the SCs.

The issue can have affect beyond today. Consider the bigger picture of LTG etc. I’m not a fan of the idea of buying status (equivalency) purely because you don’t actually receive the SC’s your exchanging points for. Just a few lounge access opportunities. I do however get the value of international lounge access on long haul trips. I guess it’s a personal decision based on where your perceived value in the transaction lies.

Say 120,000 points is worth $1800 (at a nominal 1.5c/pt). How many F lounge visits would you need to get $1800 worth?

WP is nice but gold is the sweet spot of the program.

Sweet spot maybe, but I've found WP is also excellent beyond FLounge visits, not least on two counts:

1. IRROPS - found QF quite proactive previously (especially accommodating when cancelling on the "golden triangle")
2. Award Release - have about a 75% success rate to date which helps as QF continues to drive online award availability away from its own metal

Indeed. I'd far rather do the flights to retain WP where possible. However if I do reach LTG then my attitude may change. With no LTP on the horizon I'd be much more open to using points to retain WP.

If I reach LTG I may end up stopping chasing status entirely with no further lifetime benefits left to aim for.

QANTAS Club won't get you into Domestic Business or International First lounges and it won't get you into a lounge when not flying on a QF flight number.
Domestic business lounges are not that different to Qantas clubs. In Brisbane I head to Qantas club first and usually find something I like. I'm not a fan of Mexican or curries.

First lounges are nice the 30 minutes or so I spend in them 2-3 times a year and are not worth any number of extra points to retain.

For me status is a lot more than just lounges. Luggage is one. Better seat selection is another especially travelling with wife and daughter. Also better treatment in cases of delays.

One (if they served the Taittinger Comtes or Pol Roger Winston Churchill ;) )

Pol Roger Winston Churchill is one of my favourites and at $300/bottle, I guess I would have to visit the Flounge and drain 6 bottles myself (and that would be my drink-even point :) )

I'm not a big fan of Mexican, but I do like mild curries. Mexican is the theme for BNE, but in other locations they'll have a different specialty (e.g. pizza in PER J Lounge). Different tastes are different. I do think the J food in MEL is better than what you get in the QANTAS Club and the removal of window views from the QANTAS Club in MEL will make that far less pleasant to visit.

I spend a few hours or so in them when I visit. I try to maximise my time there.

Indeed. I don't normally take lots of luggage but I have one trip as a WP and the extra luggage allowance came in handy.

Better seat selection is a big plus imo, and the potential for better treatment in cases of delays is certainly valuable, especially if it makes the difference between being downgraded or not; or having to take an extra day's leave or not.

OK, so I held out for a week or so then rang back to see if I could negotiate a better deal. As suggested in some of the above posts, it seems the amount is not negotiable. I used the "15 years of hard earned SG status...." and "I have 4 international trips planned in the next 3 months...." chips but to no avail so it looks like the only option left is to organise a status run to ADL.... Cheers for all your contributions, Mike
