I am thinking about buying some extra SPG points and transferring to AA.

Does anyone see any problem/s with this?

I can't see any restriction about transferring purchased miles.

Thanks.

Can't see any real issue with this.

Transferring from SPG to AA is normally pretty painless

Perhaps, if concerned, start with a small number

There aren't any real problems with doing this, but it may be cheaper just to buy the points in AA directly from points.com - Purchase Miles

An AAdvantage member can purchase up to 40,000 miles per calendar year.

They cost from USD0.025 per mile.

(10,000 will set one back USD250)

An SPG member can purchase up to 20,000 SPG points for USD0.035 each. With the 5k bonus for transferring 20K or more points to AAdvantage, those 20,000 can be converted to 25,000 AAdvantage points. This is a effective rate of USD0.028 per Addvantage mile.

Unless you are after more than 40,000 AAdvantage miles, purchasing directly into ones AA account is a less expensive option.

Don't forget that if you buy through AA (points.com) you will pay a $30 transaction fee, and if you're getting 5000 points or less it is $0.275/mile. This may make purchasing through SPG cheaper, especially for small amounts.

Ocassionally one or the other may have a bonus, e.g. 10%. Priority Club has a 10% bonus at the moment on purchased points. I've seen AA do the bonus before. I'm not sure when/if SPG do bonus points for purchased points.
